Royal Headache: High 12"

What's Your Rupture? Records

I'm not really sure why I'm writing this description because anyone who has any interest in checking out Royal Headache has probably already done so by this point... the media blitz surrounding the arrival of this release has been very intense, with lots of people throwing around "record of the year" accolades even though its only August. I have to say, though, this is really, really good. I wasn't a mega-fan of their first record... that one was huge too, and while I liked it OK I thought the vocals were a bit too over the top for my taste. This time around the vocals are slightly more restrained (though still utterly distinctive), which places more emphasis on the songs rather than the vocal performance... and oh man are these songs good! This band can toss off a pop banger like no one's business, so perhaps that's why my favorite songs are the ones where they deviate from that somewhat, such as "Another World," which reminds me a little bit of the early Jam stuff, and "Garbage," which sounds like it could have been one of the weirder tracks on one of the early LPs by the Boys. It's inevitable with a release with this high of a profile that there will be cheerleaders and there will be haters, but if you're able to listen through the hype there's a great record here.
