Our take: Debut EP from this Arizona synth-based outfit for Lumpy, and boy is it "challenging." Mr. Wax operate somewhere in the grey area between the simple and stark synth-punk of early Devo and the more abstract, dadaist music of the Residents or any of a bazillion music projects heavily influenced by Captain Beefheart. Even when Mr. Wax is at his most straightforward--as on the track "Wax City"--the vocals are highly affected, reminding me of Jackie from Urochromes' Mark Cone persona. However, other tracks are more experimental... "ID Theft and Human Cloning and More" sounds like you're listening to a radio play in another language... the sounds reproduced here sound like random nonsense at first, but there's the persistent feel that there's some kind of meaning or pattern that you can't quite access. It's profoundly disorienting, which is a quality that I know a lot of people really like in music. If you're one of those people give this a try, but if you just wanna rock, man, you'd be advised to give this a wide berth.
