New LP from this latest band featuring Ian Svenonius (Nation of Ulysses, the Make-Up, etc.) and Katie Greer (Priests) sharing lead vocals. I'm not a huge Ian Svenonius fanatic or anything, but I am REALLY digging this LP. The album's title is no misnomer, as everything about this album is indeed very minimal... while C&TG are a conventional rock band in terms of the lineup, there's a ton of space in the arrangements, which makes it all the more thrilling when a big guitar overdub or something like that drops in. Genre-wise, this flirts with a kind of minimal early rock and roll sound, upbeat Northern Soul-type stuff, and maybe even a little bit of post-punk. I think the defining attribute of this band, though, is the knowing wink with which it's all delivered. No doubt that will drive some people nuts who prefer their music free of irony and sarcasm, but I think it's a cool unifying element that allows the band to experiment with a bunch of fairly different sounds while always sounding like the same band.
