Few funk groups have had as far-reaching an influence as quintessential New Orleans outfit The Meters, the project of keyboardist/vocalist Art Neville, and the famed house band of Allen Toussaint. During their mid-60s-to-late-70s heyday they released a heavy mixture of instrumental/vocal albums and singles of Louisiana-inflected soul, R&B, and funk that continue to inspire and marvel to this day. Their signature singles "Cissy Strut" and "Sophisticated Cissy" did big business on the R&B charts at the tail end of the '60s and are featured on the band's economic and nuanced eponymous 1969 debut which proved once and for all that The Meters were just fine on their own!
