“FRI existed sometime between 1984 and 1986. The punk scene had basically turned to shit. With the exception of a few bands like Poison Idea, hardcore seemed lost. Most of the hardcore bands had gone metal. Many bands had gone semi-glam. The original sound and energy that these bands once had was a thing of the past. With nowhere else to turn, these four kids went backwards. Inspired by bands like VOID, The Germs, GG Allin, DEVO, and Iggy & The Stooges, they tried their best to write some songs. Trouble was the only member of the band that could actually play was Kurt. Using his ever-handy razorblade as a pick, he carved out a couple quick tunes for the others to try to keep up with. McSoil had pieced together a drum kit with the snare duct-taped to the top of the kick drum and used trash can lids as cymbals. Phil only had two strings on his bass – both E strings - which he played through an accordion amp. Wirehead pulled together a shitty PA and the band was complete. While they had successfully pulled together some noise makers, they still couldn’t really play em..so they concentrated more on their live performance. Fueled by mass amounts of drugs and alcohol, they sought to disrupt, offend, and destroy. There was never any intention to excel at anything other than total regression. The band only played house parties, backyards, public parks, warehouses, and skate spots – DIY through and through. Live shows rarely made it past 3 songs. Many shows ended in fist fights and riots. Often wearing a Lucha Libre mask and a furry Captain Sensiblesque suit, Phil used every inch of his 75 foot long cord to attack people in the audience, Wirehead spent most of the time doing forward DEVO flips and worm-piling on the ground, and with McSoil’s trashcan kit ending up in the audience, in pools and in pieces more often than not, it was only Kurt who was able to carry a semblance of a tune through to the end. There were only two attempts at recording the band, both done by Billy Wedgeworth (RIP) on his 4 track – one in Chris Kent’s (RIP) garage that turned more into a party than a recording session and only a couple tunes were even decipherable. The other was in Wirehead’s Mum’s garage, which produced the songs on this 7”. The exact dates of either of those recordings are unknown. While short-lived, FRI and the parties they played are still the stuff of legend among the people that were there to witness them. What you have in your hands here are 12 songs pulled from a broken cassette tape that was brought back to life in hopes of memorializing a band that existed during The Time That Punk Forgot. The songs are shit. The recording is shit. Some will get it..most won’t..and that was always the point.”
