Hello fellow Sorry Staters! A new week means a new what am I listening to. I grabbed this record having no idea what it would sound like. I found it in a discount bin at one of the other local record stores here in Raleigh. I recognized Tippett's name from a record that we had in the shop a while back where he was doing a semi free jazz dueling piano type improv with another player that I can't seem to find or remember. Tippet was born in England and played with numerous big time musicians such as members of Soft Machine and even played with King Crimson on their second through fourth albums and led the collective group Ovary Lodge (which is a GREAT free jazz group, check them out as well!). Also, Tippett married Julie Driscoll from Brian Augers & The Trinity. The album titled “You are here... I am there” is more improv than it is free jazz, but there are some out there moments that sound like it could be a soundtrack to a lion chasing its prey, but quickly shoots back to some really great mid tempo modal-esque sounds. Though this is a group fronted by Tippett, Elton Dean is the alto saxophonist and really has his moments on this record while you can hear Tippett softly play the keys in the background. Most of the album seems to be Dean and Tippett going back and forth and trading off solos, battling to see who could improvise the best. Goes to show you that sometimes you just gotta buy that record that looks cool or if you see a name you recognize. In my case it was totally worth it! Still listing CDs and ya'll still keep buying them like crazy! Lots of cool cheap 7”s are popping up in the used section as well so please take a look! Until next week!
