We’re back with another rundown of the pre-orders that hit the Sorry State website this week.
First up, what is likely to be one of the big pop events of the summer: Madonna’s new album Confessions II. We have three different versions available: standard red vinyl, an indie exclusive version on white vinyl with alternate cover artwork, and an expanded edition on translucent pink vinyl that features another cover art variation and an extra 12”.
One of my favorite 80s metal bands, Florida’s Nasty Savage, get a pair of reissues this week, both on color vinyl. We have their classic debut self-titled 12”… You've got to have the song “Metal Knights” so you can scream along with the falsetto “poseurs will DIIIIEEEEE!” in the chorus. There’s also a 2x12” reissuing the band’s next two records, Indulgence and Abstract Reality, which are a bit more mature and are some of the first stirrings of technical metal in the sub-underground. Essential stuff IMO.
Spy’s new 12” Seen Enough has a new pressing coming on black/orange/white splatter vinyl courtesy of Closed Casket Activities.
Numero Group reissued the Jejune full-lengths individually a few weeks ago, and now they have a deluxe 5x12” box set collecting the band’s work in one spot. Numero boxes are always killer and they’re reasonably priced considering all they pack in there, so grab this if you’re a fan. We have it on red vinyl or slightly less expensive black.
Voivod has a new album coming out called Symphonique, which features the band playing a greatest hits set accompanied by the Quebec Symphony Orchestra. If it’s good enough for Metallica…
If you’re a lover of weird and progressive music, I have a few hot tips for you. We have reissues of two albums by the brilliant 70s French space rockers Heldon, both of which originally came out in 1976: their fourth album Agneta Nilsson and their fifth album Un Reve Sans Consequence Special. And if you’re looking for something even quirkier, reissue kings Superior Viaduct have a new pressing of This Heat’s first album… some of the headiest, most out-there post-punk music you can find.
Hunx and His Punx has a new single called Punkettes.
Finally, there are several cool new jazz reissues this week. Bobby Hutcherson’s 1966 album Components gets the Tone Poet treatment, while Miles 56 is a new box set containing all the material Miles Davis recorded for Prestige Records that year, when he knocked out a series of brilliant albums in quick succession in order to complete his contract with the company. And my personal pick, John Coltrane’s late-period masterpiece Ascension has a new pressing on the Verve Vault series. This reissue collects both versions of the album; initial pressings contained a completely different take of the title track (which is spread across both sides of the album), but was changed when someone (Coltrane? the label?) decided they liked the other take of the song better.
