Finally managed to nab a few copies of one of the most talked-about metal releases of last year. Like Beastmilk, New York's Vaura occupy this kind of hitherto-unexplored territory between melodic 80s goth-rock like the Chameleons, Echo and the Bunnymen and the Cure and modern metal. While Beastmilk is pretty much straight pop, though, you can hear the metal influence in Vaura a little bit more. They have this way of taking the kind droning, haunting sound of black metal and harnessing it in the service of something much more melodic. You definitely don't have to be a metalhead to get into this, though... if you dig the early Chameleons odds are you'll flip for this. Recommended.
