Thelonious Monk: Monk 12"
The unusual combination of Sonny Rollins' tenor sax and Julius Watkins' French horn comprises the front line on two of Monk's compositions. Later, Watkins would form a working group of the same instrumentation with tenor man Charlie Rouse called Les Jazz Modes. Subsequently, Rouse would play for ten years in Monk's group. The second session, with Ray Copeland and Frank Foster, includes three more Monk originals (including the renowned "Hackensack") and a unique Monk treatment of "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes."Tags: jazz
