Sin Motivo: Laberintos 7"

Not Normal Records

Latest EP from this Texas band who have been around for a little while, and boy is it a scorcher! Aesthetically this has more than a little bit in common with the Toxic State bands. You can see that in the packaging, but also in the music... Sin Motivo are a hardcore band that is, simultaneously, more than hardcore. Sonically, in a way they remind me a lot of Destruction Unit, but a much tougher and more aggro (if that's even possible?!) version of that band's sound. Basically, there's a kind of tension constantly at play between the guitars and the rhythm section. The rhythm section is generally pounding out this deep, Stooges-inspired groove (or Stooges by way of Flipper at least), while the guitars occasionally lock in to play a matching riff, but just as often careen off into the realm of free-form noise. However, somehow it all adds up to a whole that is really catchy and powerful. If you're into any of the aforementioned bands this is well worth a listen, and if you don't like it you can always just stare at that fold-out poster sleeve, which is pretty much objectively gorgeous.
