Poison Idea: Confuse & Conquer 12"

Southern Lord Records

So, there's a new Poison Idea LP... they are, without a doubt, one of my favorite bands of all time, but hearing new music from them comes with so much baggage! I have to say, though, that this LP is surprisingly good. I actually like it quite a bit more than their last LP, Latest Will and Testament, which probably seems like blasphemy because that is the last record that Pig Champion was involved with, but I think this is through and through a better record. Whereas Latest Will was kind of samey-sounding all the way through (reminding me a bit of War All the Time in that respect), Confuse & Conquer sees the band flexing their songwriting muscles a bit, hitting on something that's more like the powerful but slightly more eclectic vibe of Feel the Darkness. There are some full-bore hardcore songs, but also weirder songs that don't fit any set template and I actually like that a lot. The band sounds extremely competent and even inspired in places, but Jerry's vocals really shine here, sounding just as good as he did during the Feel the Darkness era. I feel like if a newer band put out this LP people would be really stoked, but I think it's tough for everyone to hear Poison Idea (especially a Pig Champion-less Poison Idea) with fresh ears. However, if you're one of the people who are open to the idea of Poison Idea moving you in the year 2015 this is well worth a listen.
