Perfect Pussy: 2013 cassette

self-released

I went to see Perfect Pussy live the other night never having heard a note of their music and I was really impressed. I was a big fan of Meredeth's old band, Shoppers, and I expected Perfect Pussy to be a kind of continuation of that. In a way they are; like Shoppers, this is bathed in feedback and noise, and again like Shoppers this is unexpectedly catchy, with little hooks constantly rising out of the din. However, Perfect Pussy are much harder and faster than Shoppers ever were... though they have a keyboard player, live they sounded like a hardcore band, and while that doesn't necessarily come across on this EP the aggression definitely translates. I love bands like these guys and White Lung that combine the energy and aggression of hardcore with a kind of feminine sensibility, and ultimately I think there's a reason they're hyped. The songs are good, and really sound like just about nothing else I've ever heard. The sounds of 2014... get into it.
