Man, a new GG King record... I should know by now not to underestimate this man, but I went into this with no real expectations and was absolutely blown away. It's been really interesting watching GG King evolve... when the project started he was clearly working through some leftover Carbonas material (at least that's what I heard from people in the know), but particularly on the first LP you could tell that he was striving for a more original sound, a really unlikely fusion of black metal and modern garage-punk. Well, that sound is brought to full fruition here to the point where it's definitely greater than the sum of its parts. To me, black metal is all about atmosphere and garage-punk is all about hooks, and those two genre-defining traits are fused perfectly here, often in surprising and exciting ways. Further, it hangs together incredibly well as a full-length album... listening to the whole thing in one sitting, you really feel like you're listening to a classic record. I'm not really sure what else to say about this... I could list a whole bunch of bands that different parts remind me of, but this is so much its own thing that such an exercise seems both reductive and ultimately futile. Seriously, just get this... it's truly great.
