Fur Helmet: S/T 12"

Debut 12" EP from NYC's Fur Helmet. Psychedelic and atmospheric swamp rock from members of Hank Wood and the Hammerheads, JJ Doll, Pleasure Industry, Barbed Wire, etc. FFO: The Gun Club, The Flesh Eaters, the Scientists. Highly recommended.

Our take: Debut 12" from this new band out of NYC featuring some familiar faces. It's funny, after years of pogo-punk, it seems like the new sound in New York is a kind of swampy, garage-y post-punk dirge influenced by bands like the Gun Club, the Scientists, and the Birthday Party. Like the punks in Cheena, Fur Helmet attack the sound with vigor, showing off some impressive chops and thankfully dispensing with the ultra-raw recording that I tend to associate with the NY scene in favor of something much denser and clearer. It's very much in the vein of bands like Destruction Unit or Ukiah Drag, and as with those bands there's a kind of cold, distant, cerebral vibe that's very different than the confrontational and organic vibe of the older bands I mentioned above. I'm not really sure how I feel about it yet... there's obvious a lot going on, but there aren't really big hooks or anything else that makes it totally jump out on first listen. However, if you have room for a grower in your life I think this can definitely fit the bill.
