Flowers of Evil: S/T 12"

Deranged Records

Flowers Of Evil crawled out of the New York City sewer in the sweltering summer of 2014. Armed with a set of avant-snot rippers, they’ve been leaving a trail of broken glass and bloody noses all over the city. Their self-titled debut album is coming soon from Deranged. For fans of the Germs, Rudimentary Peni, the Monorchid and beyond.

Our take: Every once in a while Deranged seems to pop out of nowhere with one of these bands that I've never even heard of... I'm not sure how they do it. Does Gord actually listen to all of the demos that people send him? (Where does he find the time?) Does he spend all of his time cruising SoundCloud and BandCamp accounts of unknown local bands? Regardless of how he does it, this Flowers of Evil LP shows that he can recognize a diamond in the rough. One of the things I really like about this record is that it's a bit unclassifiable... like personal favorites Brain F≠, it seems to exist in this gray area between hardcore and Atlanta-style garage punk, incorporating the tempos of the former with the hookiness of the latter. There's even a background vocalist that sounds weirdly like Nick G≠ himself. I'm also really stoked to see a band reference the Monorchid in an album description in the year 2015... does this mean that it will be cool to like the Monorchid and Skull Kontrol again? Good, because I never stopped! Anyway, I really like this LP. It's a bit of a one-note thing, like the band have hit upon this really distinctive style and don't know quite how to push the boundaries of it yet, so if they stay together they sound like the kind of band whose next record is going to be a real face-melter, but in the meantime this is one catchy, infectious, and dirty punk LP.
