This is the first demo of DSS. After four years of anticipation, the commander of dark matter has sent his riders to Earth. The DSS metalpunk maniacs ride with speed and dated equipment to open a time portal with spell. Four burners and a hard rock cover to send you back to the deep!

Our take: Serious contender for demo of the month right here from this band who, if I'm not mistaken, hail from New Jersey. Despite this being, on the surface, a very raw release, DSS have a surprising amount of depth to their sound, incorporating influences from NWOBHM (particularly some killer, incredibly melodic Maiden-style guitar leads), early black metal like Venom and Sodom (in the driving rhythms and looseness of the playing), hardcore and crust (G.I.S.M.-esque vocals and a generally hardcore-informed approach), and even a bit of rock and roll. What they arrive at is kind of a "blackened rock and roll" sound that sounds like all of the above things in a blender, but truly integrated and digested into a distinct and well-formed sound. There are a lot of metal bands out there, but very few of them have the catchiness and the memorable songwriting of, say, bands like Midnight... DSS are one of those bands, but honestly are way rawer and (dare I say it?) more legit than where Midnight have gone over their last handful of releases. If you're a metal person you should absolutely grab this, but this is enough of a ripper than even those who only dabble in metal would be well served by checking it out.
