Woodboot have gotten quite a bit faster since these initial recordings, but the slightly slower tempos here just make the songs seem that much catchier and more pop-oriented. As on their other material, they have this Spits-esque way of taking the basic template provided by the Ramones and adding a little bit of oomph and grit to meet modern standards of toughness and power (without, of course, sacrificing any of the catchiness). It's funny, when you first listen to them, Beta Boys sound like a fairly typical hardcore band, but the more you pay attention the more you realize that they really have managed to stake out their own particular aesthetic. Their songs are fast but not too fast, and the guitars have a chorus effect on them but they never sound too over-the-top goth-y... the descriptions for one of their records mentioned Hell Comes to Your House-style punk, and while I've never heard that mentioned as a genre before, it kind of makes sense... Beta Boys do fit somewhere on the same part of the punk spectrum occupied by 45 Grave's punkier moments (like the track "Evil"), Christian Death, Legal Weapon, and Modern Warfare. In an age when every band seems to break up after just a demo and a 7", it's refreshing to hear a band grow a little bit more and really develop their own voice. Here's hoping they continue to push forward, and until then I'll be spinning this EP quite a bit.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0255/7539/products/IMG_2473_ebfc3b1f-c13e-436d-bc08-54a7bde71167.jpg?v=1480449964
fleetwood-mac-rumours-12-new
Fleetwood Mac: Rumours 12"

Note: the pressing you receive may not match the stock photo. I foresee a spot on my best of 2017 list as well. This got a lot of plays on the 'ol bandcamp, but man... this thing hits so much harder on vinyl. If you haven't heard Warm Bodies, they're a bit difficult to describe. They're as fast as any hardcore band, but aren't really heavy at all. The guitarist seems to be playing lead 90% of the time while the bass weaves around it in ultra-catchy lines and the vocalist shouts in that high-pitched yelp that's kind of similar to what you might hear on a Janitor Scum, CCTV, or BB Eye record. The sound is dense, frantic, and layered, and despite the fact that it's super raw and punk, it's one of my favorites record to turn up really loud and zone out to while I notice all of the subtle layers in the music. I'm kind of at a loss for what else to say about this one... it sounds like a record that could have only come out in the year 2017, but at the same time sounds totally classic and uncontrived. For a “death race”, simple-minded listeners couldn’t feel more enlivened by Kel’s goofy, lighthearted brand of synth-infused, surfy garage rock lined with an ear-pleasing arrangement of mechanical whirls, buoyant keytones, alien-like vocal distortions, and of course, spindly, simplistic chords emanating from a guitar most assuredly decorated in all sorts of sweet flame decals. I’ve been fully on board with Liquids since they first started putting their recordings out into the world and I’m always excited to hear new material from them. If you haven’t heard the band, they sound to me like a mix of the Coneheads’ quirky punk with the youthful energy of the early Lookout! Records catalog, but filtered through the aesthetic of piss-raw DIY hardcore and garage. At the same time, though, I feel like that description does the band a disservice because they really do have their own distinctive sound… while I could see you liking Liquids if you’re into anything from Teengenerate and the Reatards to early Screeching Weasel to the catchier end of the No Way Records sound (stuff like Acid Reflux or Social Circkle), there isn’t anyone out there (at least that I’m aware of) that sounds precisely like them, which is truly the mark of a great band. In addition to their distinctiveness and their facility with a pop hook, another thing that I love about Liquids is that there’s always a giant helping of fuck you attitude included in everything they do. They’re very Replacements-esque in that there’s almost an element of self-sabotage at work in choices like recording some of their best songs with abysmal fidelity or making their bulging discography almost deliberately confusing, with tracks appearing on multiple releases, sometimes in the same version and sometimes not, different versions of the same release sounding radically different (I’m not sure if this is the case anymore, but for a long time the digital versions of Hot Liqs that were available online were vastly inferior to the vinyl version on Drunken Sailor), and a handful of records that had ridiculously limited / hard to get pressings. Also like the Replacements, while these choices seem to push away the casual listener, they’re basically bait to the super-fans… Liquids is going to be hard to digest for the casual bandcamp surfer, but those of us who tracked down the 7” only released in Brazil or one of the 111 gold vinyl copies of More than a Friend that were only available from Drunken Sailor (and yes, I am a member of both of those clubs) feel like we’re in an exclusive club, which makes us like the band even more. I doubt any of this is deliberate on the band’s part, but it’s worth noting as Liquids’ manner of presenting themselves is often as interesting as their music. Anyway, as for Hot Liqs Revenge, those of us who are on board the Liquids train will obviously find a lot to love here (even if we’ve heard a bunch of these songs before), but I’m not sure this is the best place to start with Liquids if you haven’t heard them before… a lot of the production here is super, super raw (though it varies a lot from song to song) and with a full 20 tracks that all bop along at a rather similar tempo it’s a lot to digest. So, if you’re just getting into Liquids I’d recommend starting with Hot Liqs, but if you’re one of us who just can’t get enough then you already know this is essential.

<span data-sheets-value='{"1":2,"2":"Glued jackets with matte finish, risographed inserts done by Oddities Prints, new Neck Chop sticker done by Durango 65 and DL code

“I’ve had it!”

Truly, these are words to define an entire generation -- a generation plagued by empty promises, emptier pockets, and even emptier skulls. Lysol have sounded slightly different on each of their releases (at least the ones that I’ve heard), and Teenage Trance is no different. Whereas their last single on Total Punk was a blistering slice of hardcore, this time around they slow things down just a hair, particularly on the b-side, which locks into a swampy, Stooges-esque groove that I’m sure will remind more people than just me of Hank Wood & the Hammerheads. While their last single on Total Punk was so short that I felt like I couldn’t get a handle on it, Teenage Trance keeps us from pinning Lysol down because of its stylistic diversity… are they the blistering hardcore band that plays the verses of “Teenage Trance,” the catchy punk band that plays that song’s choruses, or the in-the-pocket rock group on the b-side? They’re great at all three modes, and just like their last one this single leaves me salivating for a future LP that brings together all of these compelling aspects of the band’s sound into a coherent, unified vision.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0255/7539/products/IMG_6459_c45118a4-8b72-48ed-9775-45bc0b438ae2.JPG?v=1527624967
stiff-love-trouble-7
Stiff Love: Trouble 7"

<span data-sheets-value='{"1":2,"2":"Glued jackets with textured covers and matte finish, Stiff Love sticker, new Neck Chop sticker done by Durango 65 and DL code

Nevermind the weird phrasing: Olympia’s Stiff Love is a fuckin’ beautiful instance punk rock incestuation. My band No Love played with them on their recent tour and they were great live, but this 7” is even better. Stylistically, Stiff Love have a really cool vibe… there are elements of classic punk, 60s garage, and power-pop, but it skews very far toward the punk, particularly with the fast and loose playing and the raw production on this 7”. I’m reminded a lot of Nikki & the Corvettes’ best tracks, but Stiff Love are even punker than that reference would indicate. The songs themselves are super dense with a ton going on… each one generally has a great main riff, a cool lead that comes in over top of the main riff at some point (they’re a twin-guitar attack BTW), and catchy vocals that are more of a rhythmic yelp than melodic singing. Despite the fact that there’s so much going on the songs never feel overworked, which again probably comes at least partially from the loose playing style (which is totally drenched with swagger) and the rough production. Stiff Love are such great songwriters and musicians that I can easily imagine them taking the path of a band like the Donnas or the Hives… with more “professional” production this is a band that could get really, really big. Or they could just keep putting out records as good as Trouble and they’ll develop their own rabid, cult-like audience. Or maybe they’ll break up and these tunes will get comped on a future volume of Killed by Death and we old-timers will talk about how we remember when you could pick this thing up for six measly bucks. The formula is largely the same—tough, catchy punk with a drum machine pumping away relentlessly behind it—but the significantly beefier sound and razor sharp songwriting make this the S.B.F. record to get. When you first listen to Same Beat Forever the first things to jump out are the massive choruses (see the kick-off track, “Tarantula Hawk”) and the street tough vibe. Seth remarked that this record reminds him of oi! music, not because S.B.F. have any of those stylistic traits, but rather because this sounds like simple and tough street rock a la Blitz. When you listen closely, though, you hear a lot of delicate detail. Every song is packed with catchy guitar hooks worthy of the Marked Men (though S.B.F. sound nothing like them), and despite the self-mocking title, S.B.F. use their drum machine more effectively than just about anyone since Big Black. Terms like “blown out” or “cacophonous” or even “muttonheaded” barely begin cover Voltaire’s strike, yet raving hooks are discernible amid the chaos. The whole trick-bag is inverted as well, with rhythm and bass throb being more prevalent than any requisite guitar screwing. Hell, the album opens with a galling instrumental that somehow serves as a nose-thumbing dissection of modern-day punk tropes, a theme carried throughout the program, always guided by Voltaire’s spasms and helium yowl.

Neck Chop is pleased to publish Neo Neos’ newest news as part of our year-end operations. Neo Neos are punk maximalists with minimal production values, pounding out track after track of loose and cacophonous racket. Kill Someone You Hatefeatures a whopping 22 tracks, and it’s a total information overload in much the same way that the second Liquids LP (Hot Liqs Revenge, also on Neck Chop) was. In the Red was supposed to release the EP, but several years of production delays and a switch to a new label put everything out of whack. The sound here is what we expect from Suburban Homes. They sound a lot like Desperate Bicycles with their deadpan vocals and gloomy, late-70s-Britain atmosphere, but their lyrics address the brutal mundanities of 2010s life. Their sound (like late 70s Britain) can be monochromatic, so my favorite moments in Suburban Homes songs come when you get a sudden burst of color, which comes in forms like a chiming, Billy Childish-style guitar solo (like in “Magazine Version” and “City Life”) or an unexpected overdub of noise guitar (“Corporate Hijack”). Suburban Homes’ flash factor hovers around zero, but I’ve always loved punk rock that has this unpretentious, workmanlike quality. Rashomon have a Japanese singer and take some obvious stylistic cues from Japanese hardcore’s history, but Pathogen X doesn’t sound like a tribute record or a genre exercise. The qualities that Rashomon share with Japanese hardcore are top-level and abstract: an emphasis on melodic lead guitar; a quasi-epic propensity to brood; metallic riffing; an overall sense of heaviness. They aren’t so gauche as to borrow riffs directly, or maybe they’re just so good at it I didn’t notice. Instead, they’ve forged their own path and, as a result, Pathogen X sounds like nothing but Rashomon. It’s hard to imagine this record appearing at any other time than the present, and consequently it feels vital and alive. It’s appropriate that this reissue comes on a California label, because while Raleigh bands like COC and No Labels were indebted to the DC scene, Subculture always sounded more like a California band to me. While the reference to Green Day and Bad Religion in the label’s description is overstating the case, Subculture remind me of early west coast punk bands like Social Distortion, Channel 3, and TSOL in that there’s a lot of British punk in their sound, albeit simplified and sped up. There are a few moments (like “I Thought You Knew” and “Stomp Your Ass”) that edge toward the full-on thrash of early DRI, but Subculture did a great job of balancing energy and complexity on this LP. Revisiting this I’m also impressed with how strong the recording is, heavy and present without sounding slick. Thankfully, this reissue preserves the super cool original artwork and you even get a new insert with photos, flyers, and some liner notes. I know a lot of mediocre 80s punk has seen reissues over the past few years, but this is a great record that’s more obscure than it should be, and Puke N Vomit's reissue is well-executed and faithful.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0255/7539/products/55c5385543f717c93ada788e6b850a82fb5ae026.jpg?v=1557863293
190618909
Genetic Control: First Impressions 12"

We are glad to announce the first official reissue of Genetic Control's 1984 first impressions EP.This 35th anniversary edition will be released as a full length vinyl with loads of never before released tracks from the Genetic Control vaults. A group with a keen eye for social injustice and establishment venality, expressed in hollered tones over a full-throttle, enervating soundclash of anarcho punk, hardcore and noiserock, their third album ‘Exiled’ was fuelled by the last 12 months in (primarily) British politics: a nation circling the drain while forever eyeing the plughole. Partly, anyway.

Topics on this 12-song, 33-minute album also include some hardy perennials of left-wing hardcore punk: war, imperialism, the police, the press. If you haven’t heard Bad Breeding, their unique sound combines anarcho punk (Crass, Conflict, the UK Anthrax, etc.), noise music, and more straightforward hardcore. On any release they might tilt more toward one of those poles than the other (for instance, their first LP sounded like Flux of Pink Indians, while their Divide album put the emphasis on noisy textures), but Exiled feels like the perfect balance. Despite being progressive and even avant-garde at times, they’re a great rock band who plays with unmatched power and precision. The rhythm section is downright amazing; they’re heavy but agile, never lumbering but always providing the song with a strong center of gravity. If Bad Breeding just had a guitarist who replicated the bass lines as power chords they would be a killer hardcore band, but they are rarely so straightforward. Instead, you get a mind-bending blend of inventive guitar playing, wild noise textures, and even a bit of eerie, Bitches Brew-esque sax. The vocals follow the Crass template of providing a torrent of words spit out so quickly and venomously you’ll struggle to follow along with the lyric sheet in real time, but don’t worry… they’re worth reading even if you aren’t spinning the record. If you follow Sorry State, you know I remain fascinated with punk’s rich history, but I also believe there’s space to build upon punk’s history and make it relevant to the world I’m living in right now. Like the Big Boys, they’re all about fun, fun, fun, and while they’re as ripping as any po-faced bunch of twenty-something boys wearing fancy sneakers and/or a denim vest, their music makes me feel excited and alive rather than agitated or angry. I’m sure part of that is the members’ personalities coming out in the music (I don’t know as I haven’t met them), but it takes a ton of musical skill to articulate that vibe so perfectly. The string of covers that closes the record—the Go-Go’s, Die Kreuzen, and the Buzzcocks—is the perfect example of the Jerks’ exquisite taste and flexibility as players, not to mention a good approximation of the band’s own originals if you put those three groups in a blender on its gnarliest setting. Friendships Formed in the Pit is a shoe-in for my year-end favorites list and one of the most remarkable hardcore punk records of 2019.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0255/7539/products/de918e504c9cc65f3fc69d3daac771fb0bea5072.jpg?v=1568241083
190625402
Nosferatu: A Field of Hope 12"

Austin, TX’s NOSFERATU are one of the most substantive and powerful hardcore punk bands currently in operation. Often likened to rage linchpins such as VOID and KORO, Nosferatu’s too-good-to-be-true attack succeeds on all fronts: inventive & highly impressive drumming, tortured, piss-gutter vocals and excessively grimy riffs that unveil multiple hooks despite the concise nature of each breathless tune. Since forming in 2016, the gang have since amassed myriad short-run cassettes, stray compilation shards and one recognized ruler EP via Lumpy Records --- each new entry building upon its predecessor, exhibiting a brand of winning and raw scuzz that’s too drool-inducing for punks to ignore. Timed to coincide with their debut album (soon to be released via La Vida Es Un Mus), Neck Chop is thrilled to present all of Nosferatu’s savage formative material on LP format --- 56 tracks total!!! Mandatory punk, no excuses, no snoozing.

Our take: A Field of Hope is a “The First Two Years” compilation from these Koro-worshipping Texans, bringing together their debut EP on Lumpy with the very limited demo and rehearsal recording releases that they’ve put out over that time. There are several recording sessions compiled here so the sound can change from track to track, but it’s uniformly raw with the focus on the catchy guitars and frantic drums, with the vocals and bass always fighting for your attention. Even with such primitive-sounding recordings, Nosferatu sound explosive. Like Koro, they pack so much drama into their short songs, each one its own maze of dramatic punches, stops and starts, tempo changes, clipped leads, and off-balance lunges. With so much material crammed onto the record it blends together into a monumental, punishing whole, but you can drop the needle anywhere and find nothing but raw, face-shredding hardcore. Like Crucifix, Executioner was explosive when they were in full-on hardcore mode, but like Social Unrest their songs were shot through with the melodic sensibility of Southern California bands like (early) Social Distortion and the Adolescents.
