If you haven’t heard, Fetish consists of three former members of Poison Idea (including Thee Slayer Hippy and Vegetable) and three members of Long Knife (the world’s premier Poison Idea imitators), and (perhaps surprisingly, perhaps not) manage to beat any and all post-Pig Champion versions of Poison Idea at their own game. Even though the lineup leans heavily on the War All the Time version of PI, the a-side, “Take the Knife,” sounds more like Feel the Darkness-era… it’s an explosive hardcore track for sure, but it also has a really striking sense of dynamics that I associate with Feel the Darkness. PI were great songwriters, but they were also the masters of arranging a hardcore song, and “Take the Knife” shows that that ability to manage the bells and whistles is alive and well with Fetish. Then there’s the b-side, which is a cover of Love’s song “A House Is Not a Motel,” and while it’s a significant downshift from “Take the Knife,” it hints that there will be a sense of depth and ambition to Fetish’s music and that we can count on them to deliver more than just a bunch of crowd-pleasing thrashers. Yes, this EP is a frustratingly short tease, but the rush of adrenaline it provides has me waiting with baited breath for the full dose that is hopefully to come.

Reissue of this blues classic.

<span data-sheets-value='{"1":2,"2":"Double Feature. The production is spot-on, with the perfect combination of heaviness and clarity, and the performance is totally feral. However, what really elevates this record, for me, is the riffing. The shining star of the bunch is that first riff that kicks in after the drum intro to the first track, "Culture?." This riff is an instant classic, the kind of thing you'll hear guitarists pecking out during soundcheck for many years to come. In a sign of their judicious sense of restraint, though, the riff doesn't actually reappear in the song... but that's OK because Warthog have plenty more where that came from. I'm also loving the sick dual leads that pop up a couple of times... that's something that's really difficult to pull off, but Warthog totally nail it without sounding like some kind of cheesy, Thin Lizzy-fied version of hardcore. I often remark that it's difficult to pinpoint precisely what separates good hardcore from bad hardcore, or great hardcore from pretty good or just OK hardcore. Maybe it's an attention to detail, maybe it's the ability to navigate the minefield of potential cliches, but whatever it is Warthog have it. One of the very few bands who could lay legitimate claim to the title of "best hardcore band in the world."

Riki is the synth-pop project of LA based synthesist, R. For instance, you might know him as the beastly beat keeper behind Paris Oi band RIXE or the song writer behind the ever so catchy BOSS but for those who have yet to be initiated this is CONDOR - a one man band and love letter of sorts to his homeland and the particular strain of Oi / Punk music that it started yielding well over three decades ago. Previously only available on a pair of scarcely pressed and circulated cassingles, Beach Impediment Records is ecstatic to further the circulation of these six songs on the vinyl format. Channeling the brightest moments of the classic compilation series "Chaos En France" (and really, anything else on the Chaos Productions label that's worth a damn) combined with an execution so precise and well crafted that it carries that undeniable trademark of Smadja's many other contributions to the genre of punk over his time in it due to it's attention to detail and adoration of quality. And as a special bonus this slab features an additional track that is exclusive to this release - a cover of "Vengeance" by the 80's Parisian Oi outfit D.E.M. Each record comes in a jacket featuring the stellar art of Beau Richie depicting what I'd assume must be a typical day in one of the abundant alleyways that weave through out the City of Lights, plus a killer 18" x 24" fold out poster insert. Be sure to catch CONDOR on tour this spring through out North America!

Our take: Condor is a one-man project by Maxime from Rixe, and this debut vinyl collects two cassingles released over the past two years. If you’re skeptical about the whole demo-on-vinyl thing, let me assure you that the music collected here is among the most memorable and exciting punk music to come through here as of late. When I first heard Condor I wondered why they were a new project because they didn’t seem that different from Rixe; both are oi! bands that sing in French and are indebted to their country’s long tradition of oi! music. However, aside from two fast, Partisans-style UK82 tracks, Condor distinguish themselves from Rixe by being much more melodic. While the vocals are still gruff, the bass and guitar carry a lot more melody than they do in Rixe. Nowhere is this clearer than on the standout track, “Chacun Pour Soi,” which has not one but two classic melodic lead riffs. These riffs are so catchy that I could imagine them being used in a 90s melodic hardcore song by a band like Ten Foot Pole or Good Riddance, but you won’t find any clicky kick drum or whiny vocals here. I’ve loved everything Rixe has put out, but this Condor stuff might be even better.

With the passage of two years since the release of their demo, along with a hefty helping of gigs under their belts, Mid-Atlantic powerhouse WITCHTRIAL have at long last bestowed upon us all the absolutely thunderous offering that is their self titled 12" EP. Witchtrial came out of the gate sounding fully formed on that demo, so it’s no surprise that not a lot has changed on this record, which is great news if you were already a fan. While Witchtrial draws their membership from DC’s fertile hardcore punk scene, they sound like a full-on metal band. I’m sure the members all like looser and punkier metal bands like Hellhammer and Bathory, but Witchtrial doesn’t sound like those bands. I hear little of the grime I associate with death, thrash, black, or other established extreme metal subgenres here either. The songs are mid-paced, complex but not ornate or technical, and played with a precision that approaches clinical. If you can imagine a heavier, tougher version of early 80s Judas Priest played by people who probably own Age of Quarrel, you’re in the ballpark. With the music composed by the mastermind behind Herätys and the vocalist from the almighty Skitkids the members’ pedigree is impeccable, but no one here is resting on their laurels. While the music is modeled on the classic Totalitär sound, it takes that sound even further with more complex, inventive riffing, masterful songwriting and arrangement, and a production style that strikes the perfect balance between gritty, raw, heavy, and clear. I’m tempted to say that this 12” is even better than any of Totalitär’s actual LPs. It seems to take every one of that band’s key ideas and take it to its logical endpoint. It’s like a beautifully shot slasher flick; the aim is brutality, but it’s brutality executed with elegance and attention to detail. As before, their music reminds me of snotty hardcore punk in the vein of Career Suicide or Angry Samoans spiced up with dashes of the guitar sound and the visual aesthetic of the Coneheads / CCTV axis. Some moments slide more toward an Agent Orange / Adolescents beach punk sound (particularly “On Your Own” and the outros that end each side of the record), while tracks like “Same Cycle” have a straight up USHC style. Combining the snot-nosed catchiness of punk with the energy and blistering tempos of hardcore has always been a winning formula for me, and It’s a Beautiful Day in the Gulch is right in the sweet spot. Through her latest, Titanic Rising, Weyes Blood aka Natalie Mering, has designed her own universe to soulfully navigate life's mysteries. Maneuvering through a space-time continuum, she plays the role of melodic, sometimes melancholic, anthropologist. Tellingly, Mering classifies Titanic Rising – which was written and recorded during the first half of 2018, after three albums and years of touring - as the Kinks meet WWII or Bob Seger meets Enya. The latter captures the album's willful expansiveness ("You can tell there's not a guy pulling the strings in Enya's studio," she notes, admiringly). The former relays her imperative to connect with listeners. "The clarity of Bob Seger is unmistakable. I'm a big fan of conversational songwriting," she adds. "I just try to do that in a way that uses abstract imagery as well."

The Weyes Blood frontwoman grew up singing in gospel and madrigal choirs. Listen closely to Titanic Rising, and you'll also hear the jazz of Hoagy Carmichael mingle with the artful mysticism of Alejandro Jodorowsky and the monomyth of scholar Joseph Campbell. "Something to Believe," a confessional that makes judicious use of the slide guitar, touches on that cosmological upbringing. "Belief is something all humans need. Shared myths are part of our psychology and survival," she says. "Now we have a weird mishmash of capitalism and movies and science. There have been moments where I felt very existential and lost." As a kid, she filled that void with Titanic. (Yes, the movie.) "It was engineered for little girls and had its own mythology," she explains. Mering also noticed that the blockbuster romance actually offered a story about loss born of man's hubris. "It's so symbolic that The Titanic would crash into an iceberg, and now that iceberg is melting, sinking civilization."

Today, this hubris also extends to the relentless adoption of technology, at the expense of both happiness and attention spans. But Weyes Blood isn't one to stew. Her observations play out in an ethereal saunter: far more meditative than cynical. To Mering, listening and thinking are concurrent experiences. "There are complicated influences mixed in with more relatable nostalgic melodies," she says. "In my mind my music feels so big, a true production. I'm not a huge, popular artist, but I feel like one when I'm in the studio. But it's never taking away from the music.
