This stuff has been out there before, long making the rounds in tape trading circles and even getting a vinyl releases on the now-defunct Selfless Records. I remember hearing this for the first time and being blown away by the fact that all of those words that Dave Smalley barked out with such earnest passion on the first Dag Nasty LP weren't, at least for the most part, written by him at all! Admittedly it's a little jarring hearing these versions after being familiar with the Smalley versions for so long... the music is basically exactly the same, but Shawn Brown has more of a harDCore-style bark than the melodic roar that Smalley would lay down on these tracks. By the time you get to the next paragraph, they'll probably have finished another one.Their records sound like it, too, with tape hiss and questionable notes intruding on songs that often seem unfinished and almost never exceed 2 minutes. But that's the price you pay for GBV's ridiculously bountiful pop talent; bandleader Robert Pollard's head is crammed with hooks, and he's always rushing ahead as if he can't wait to get to the next one. Where BEE THOUSAND was full of instantly catchy Beatles and Hollies hooks, ALIEN LANES has more of a '70s hard-rock mood, with two-minute blasts of muscularly melodic rock crashing into one-minute (and less) bits of arena-rock balladry and miscellaneous weirdness. It'll take a few listens before it all sinks in. "Motor Away" edits the simultaneous leaving and longing of Bruce Springsteen's "Born To Run" down to two glorious minutes. It's one of several songs here that pare anthemic rock hooks and roaring guitars down to their pop essence."Big Chief Chinese Restaurant," on the other hand, is one of those overture-like ballads with which hard-rock bands used to awe arena crowds, complete with a guitar lead that nods to Guns N' Roses. Originally released in Japan on the cult label Overthrow in 1994, this reissue restores the fierce original mix two decades later. It differs from the mix on later represses hailing from Uppsala, where Swedish bombshelter-dwellers keep the flame alive. This authorized reissue reproduces the original artwork, with insert. Crack your brain up!

Our take: So, La Vida Es Un Mus has seen fit to reissue what are arguably the two best Disclose 12"s, and I couldn't be happier. I hadn't spun Tragedy in ages and I've been pretty much obsessed with it since this came in to the shop. I'm not sure if it's because I had the Swedish version of this LP (which apparently suffers from an inferior mix) or what, but really I've never been grabbed by this record like I am now. I think that what really sticks out, weirdly enough, is how un-Discharge-like it is in many ways. While obviously you could point toward any number of blatant Discharge nods on this (or any other Disclose) record, so many aspects of the songwriting are things that Discharge never did, or things that Discharge did but they're tweaked slightly in a way that makes them stand out against the background of total d-beat worship. It's an incredibly subtle thing that's difficult to pinpoint and articulate, but at the end of the day it's these subtleties that are the x-factor that separates a band like Disclose--who were as exciting and as vital as punk music gets--from bands who imitate other bands' sounds or styles in ways that are obvious, boring, and/or goofy. Stuart Schrader touches upon this point in his excellent liner notes to Yesterday's Fairytale, Tomorrow's Nightmare, so if you're interested in the philosophical underpinnings of d-beat you'll definitely want to read that. Otherwise, if you want to "get" Disclose, this particular reissue is probably the best place to start, because if you can't rage out to this record then Disclose probably aren't the band for you.

When you hear it Elliott's way you know it to be true. "Everything is exactly right when I walk around here drunk every night with an open container from 7-11, in St. Ides Heaven."

<span data-sheets-value="[null,2,"Opiate is an EP by American rock band Tool. In fact, I have been known to mark time by using IRON LUNG releases as reference points. Some of you may have thought me a bit daft. Some of you may have thought I 'overdid' it in my praise of the band. Well, HA HA HA! Once you listen to this album, you'll see that I was RIGHT and you were WRONG! There simply aren't enough words of praise in the English language for me to adequately sing the praises of this album. Jon and Jensen have outdone themselves. Literally. Some of the moments on this are the fastest IRON LUNG have ever tackled and others are the most sludge filled. So many extreme bands seem to reach a cruising speed early in their careers and then just ride it out. IRON LUNG, by contrast, keeps pushing harder and faster each year. The band takes the momentum of the split LP with LANA DAGALES (the band's finest work until now) and cranks everything up one more notch. This is part of Earache's "Full Dynamic Range Vinyl" series and while that might imply that it skimps on volume, that couldn't be further from the case... this is extreme music (maybe even the beginning of extreme music as we know it?), and this pressing is still appropriately, ear-splittingly loud. However, it also has depth and warmth that you don't hear nearly as much nowadays... it honestly sounds like a pressing from the 80s in the best way possible (it was mastered directly from the original tapes), and the artwork is reproduced much more faithfully than many recent metal reissues (I'm looking at you, Death and Sodom reissue campaigns!). Now that that's out of the way, I can get to my little mini-essay on "what Napalm Death means to me." I can still remember the first time I heard this band sometime in the early to mid 90s when I was still a teenager and my ears really weren't prepared for it. At the time it sounded hilariously awful, and it would take me many, many years to want to revisit Napalm Death, a process lengthened by having to sit through live sets by innumerable terrible, unimaginative grindcore and power violence bands in my life. However, a handful of years ago something clicked and I realized that I love Napalm Death. What once sounded more like a comedy routine than "serious music" suddenly sounded organic, uncontrived, and--even though it was by then far removed from its original context--revolutionary. Scum in particular is a fascinating listen because the two sides of the record--recorded nine months apart in 1986 and 1987--capture very different eras of the band. The a-side sounds so punk to me now... it sounds like the strand of punk that runs through Discharge, Conflict, Rudimentary Peni, and numerous other anarcho and d-beat bands taken to its logical extreme. The recording is also thick and clear (especially compared to the manufactured, computerized rawness so many modern extreme bands go for), and sounds surprisingly un-metal to my 2016 ears. As for the b-side, this is where the revolutionary and fully realized Napalm Death sound begins to take shape. The lineup has largely solidified and what, just a few months earlier, sounded like hardcore punk stretched to its furthest extremes, now sounds undeniably like something else, and while the sound would arguably be perfected over the band's next handful of releases (the Mentally Murdered EP being a personal favorite), greatness has already been achieved here. As with all Astronauts releases - totally under rated yet totally essential.

<span data-sheets-value="{"1":2,"2":"Thee Headcoatees Punk Girls reissued after 20 years, it's one of their best and meanest records.
