But then the single on Sub Pop was good, but not really explosive, and in my opinion the songs on the split 12\" with the Oh Sees didn't really stick out that much either. However, it's clear now that Total Control were saving themselves for this record, because it's really incredible. The environment in 2014 is very different... everyone and their brother seems to have a post-punk band, yet Total Control still feel miles ahead. The intro track is a total scorcher, a blistering blast of Depeche Mode-influenced electro pop that I think is easily the best track they've done (particularly in this style) since \"Paranoid Video.\" Over the course of the LP the band moves so fluidly between so many styles... krautrock, new wave, garage-punk, and the big closer \"Safety Net,\" which could almost be like U2 or something with its big, triumphant melody. I've probably listened to this 30+ times since it came out, and I don't see it getting old any time soon. I've always been really intrigued by this era of the band because I could never really figure out what they were going for... I've read that the \"bones\" part of \"Disbones\" is a reference to Broken Bones, but it's always been difficult for me to figure out exactly how these records are meant to be inspired by Broken Bones. Kawakami definitely changed up the guitar sound for this era of the band, but I've always thought of Broken Bones as having a very compact, crunchy, and traditionally metallic guitar tone. The Disbones era of Disclose, on the other hand, is even rawer and more blown out than the band's earlier stuff, with an over-the-top brittleness that comes off as almost post-modern to me. Perhaps it's splitting hairs to dissect the guitar sound on this record so much, but hey, that's what Disclose has always been about to me... about getting lost in the minutiae of the Discharge sound and tradition. It's almost as if each song implicitly asks the question, \"what is d-beat?\" Nowhere is that more apparent than the final track, \"Wardead,\" which is more or less \"Free Speech for the Dumb\" played on a loop for ten straight minutes. And to answer my own question, yes, it's d-beat as fuck. I suppose that could be a big part of Disclose's genius... the ability to work both as intellectual fodder and as big, loud, and dumb punk rock fun. As with LVEUM's reissue of \u003ci\u003eTragedy\u003c\/i\u003e, the packaging here is top-notch, with a nice tip-on style jacket. I hadn't spun \u003ci\u003eTragedy\u003c\/i\u003e in ages and I've been pretty much obsessed with it since this came in to the shop. I'm not sure if it's because I had the Swedish version of this LP (which apparently suffers from an inferior mix) or what, but really I've never been grabbed by this record like I am now. I think that what really sticks out, weirdly enough, is how un-Discharge-like it is in many ways. While obviously you could point toward any number of blatant Discharge nods on this (or any other Disclose) record, so many aspects of the songwriting are things that Discharge never did, or things that Discharge did but they're tweaked slightly in a way that makes them stand out against the background of total d-beat worship. It's an incredibly subtle thing that's difficult to pinpoint and articulate, but at the end of the day it's these subtleties that are the x-factor that separates a band like Disclose--who were as exciting and as vital as punk music gets--from bands who imitate other bands' sounds or styles in ways that are obvious, boring, and\/or goofy. Stuart Schrader touches upon this point in his excellent liner notes to \u003ci\u003eYesterday's Fairytale, Tomorrow's Nightmare\u003c\/i\u003e, so if you're interested in the philosophical underpinnings of d-beat you'll definitely want to read that. This LP came out as a hard-to-get Norwegian pressing in 2017, but Beach Impediment have done a 500-copy run so we North Americans can get our hands on it more easily. It’s rare to see a hardcore punk record get any kind of repress these days, so you can imagine \u003cem\u003eAtaque Hardcore Punk\u003c\/em\u003e must be special. And it is! Muro brings together a bunch of different threads of hardcore punk in a way that sounds natural, fresh, and exciting. I hear elements of UK82 (particularly faster stuff like Ultra Violent), d-beat, and primal pogo-hardcore like Blazing Eye and S.H.I.T., all with a dash of Una Bestia Incontrolable’s progressive experimentation. However, despite reminding me of all of these things, \u003cem\u003eAtaque Hardcore Punk\u003c\/em\u003e also sounds like a classic hardcore punk record. Muro combines these elements organically, like they’re just a shit-hot hardcore punk band doing what feels natural rather than a bunch of record nerds or punk historians showing off their influences. The recording is raw, the songs are brimming with memorable moments, and the record’s packaging is also spot-on. The jacket is not only screen printed, but hand-assembled on paper that reminds me of old European or South American LPs. There are not one but \u003cem\u003etwo\u003c\/em\u003e huge posters, and everything is packed with illustrations that are super punk yet avoid cliches. This collection on Sealed Records doesn‚Äôt add much aside from super cool new artwork and a rad poster insert, but you won‚Äôt find me complaining that some of the best anarcho punk ever is back in print. Zounds‚Äô first single, \u003cem\u003eCan‚Äôt Cheat Karma\u003c\/em\u003e, is a top 5 Crass Records release for me. One of the most musically sophisticated and capable anarcho bands, Zounds made chart-worthy music for the punks, and the three tracks from \u003cem\u003eCan‚Äôt Cheat Karma\u003c\/em\u003e are all hits that will inspire a singalong at any gathering of spiky punks. If you haven‚Äôt heard them before the choruses will hit you immediately, but as the tracks sink in you‚Äôll notice all kinds of subtleties, particularly in the guitars, which dance across the beat with the grace of a seasoned ska or funk player. Amazingly, Zounds got \u003cem\u003eeven better\u003c\/em\u003e on their second single, \u003cem\u003eDemystification\u003c\/em\u003e. The title track is the band‚Äôs best song, brooding pop that brings in subtle organ sounds to make the track both fuller and more delicate. The b-side, ‚ÄúGreat White Hunter,‚Äù is probably Zounds‚Äô best song other than ‚ÄúDemystification,‚Äù with a big classic rock riff anchoring the track. Their final three singles don‚Äôt get as much attention from punks, but they‚Äôre full of moments of equal brilliance. The a-sides to their final two singles both had a Smiths-esque rockabilly jangle different from anything the band had done before, but equally brilliant. As you can tell, Zounds are one of my favorite anarcho bands and the thirteen tracks here are long since burned into my memory banks from repeated play. With bands as IMPACT, WRETCHED, OLHO SECO, TERVEET KADET or MASACRE 68 as obvious influences in a time when the simple mention of any of those bands (or any non English speaking bands really) was usually met with a laugh or a joke. They sang in Spanish, with aggression and conviction and that made their message spread out widely, reaching thousands of Spanish speaking punks both in Latino America and Spain as well as inside USA where third generation Latino kids surely were missing a voice within the punk scene. The band split up in 1998 after a really intense year of touring and reformed in 2008. The band will be undertaking their first ever Scandinavian tour in July\/ Agust 2016.. This collection, originally released as a benefit for MRR magazine last year, includes all the LOS CRUDOS output plus compilation tracks as well as a couple demo tracks and an unreleased song. While you can hear hints of the Scandinavian style that had emerged by the time they recorded this tape (which they were aware of… one of Disattack’s members ran the label that released Anti-Cimex’s \u003cem\u003eCriminal Trap\u003c\/em\u003e 12”), most of the songs here do a lot more than just rearrange Discharge parts into new patterns. If you’re into obscure British and European crust from the early to mid-80s, though, you’ll get plenty of spins out of this 1-sided 12”. However, what I enjoyed most about \u003cem\u003eA Bomb Drops\u003c\/em\u003e was the thick booklet, which told the band’s story through a mix of archival documents and interviews with \u003cem\u003eNegative Insight\u003c\/em\u003e fanzine from 2015. Disattack started as a joke in a fanzine—the 80s punk equivalent of a meme—then morphed into a functioning band and fell apart after a few months. However, it’s the details—including encounters with future metal superstars and international d-beat legends—that make the story interesting. I can think of very few packages that tell a band’s story more eloquently than this one. The music is pitch-perfect käng, so meticulously composed that it feels almost claustrophobic at first, but when you listen closely, you hear the inventiveness on display. As with Totalitär, the riffing ranges from super catchy (“Hypocrisy,” “Bound to Fail”) to straightforward and brutal (“Lock Down Society”), with the rhythm section executing a range of different d-beat grooves and tempos to match. Not just “year end list” rules, but like “sound of the summer” rules. These records come around every once in a while—the Exploding Hearts LP; the No Hope for the Kids LP; Inepsy’s first two LPs; Criminal Damage’s first two albums—and the entire scene seems to latch onto them at once. ¿A Quién Le Echamos La Culpa? isn’t one of those records yet because it just came out, but it deserves to be. Peru’s Morbo has been a band for 20 years (!!!) and we’ve carried several of their records. I might have missed ¿A Quién Le Echamos La Culpa?, but Paco at La Vida Es Un Mus tipped me off that it was a special record, and boy was he right. ¿A Quién Le Echamos La Culpa? draws from a lot of different things—first and second-wave punk from all over the world, 60s garage rock (particularly Peru’s Los Saicos), and raw South American hardcore—and melds them into something I’ve never heard put together in this way. Some tracks are melodic punk songs with a lot of Sex Pistols in their DNA, while there are also garage rock rave-ups that wouldn’t be out of place on a Billy Childish album and tougher-sounding tracks that remind me of UK Subs-influenced bands like Toxic Reasons. Despite the variations in style, every song overflows with great riffs and catchy melodies. The recording is perfect too, with a lot of grit but not sounding self-consciously retro like some kind of audio version of an Instagram filter. Every track is a hit, but no two tracks are alike. One thing that stands out to me on \u003cem\u003eThe Rat Race\u003c\/em\u003e, however, is the lead playing. These aren’t the rock’n’roll or metal-style leads you might expect… these leads are relatively simple, sit deeper in the mix, and often push the songs to crescendos that sound totally epic. I hate to use that adjective to describe a record like this because it might seem like I’m implying stadium crust vibes, but that isn’t the case at all… what I’m getting at is that the leads feel like they push the songs to this zone of extra intensity rather than simply breaking up or adding variety to the songs. Also, shout out to the bass intro for “Another Day in Paradise,” which is sick as fuck. Perhaps I don’t need to post a disclaimer, but I will anyway: two members of Public Acid have worked at Sorry State and I feel a close connection with the band and each of its members. So maybe I’m just gassing up my buddies, but ignore my praise for Public Acid at your peril, because I think they’re one of the best and most important bands in the current hardcore scene. The other night I was talking to a friend about how, when a band is on a hot streak, it’s important to recognize what’s happening so you can savor it. It’s a feeling I get once every few years, and often I’ll get into a band so heavily that they start to define that period of my life. Direct Control, Double Negative, and Government Warning were bands I felt that way about, and I feel that way about Public Acid right now. If you’ve seen them live in the past few years, you know they’ve matured into a total fucking wrecking ball. I’m not the only one who recognizes this. After the Sorry State 10th Anniversary Weekend last fall, several people independently commented to me that there was a palpable change in energy when they took the stage. Many people, myself among them, were expecting Public Acid to make a really great record sometime soon, which brings us to \u003cem\u003eDeadly Struggle\u003c\/em\u003e. You can listen to the record and decide for yourself, but for my money this thing is a fucking masterpiece. The fast songs are blinding, the slow parts are unholy, and it feels both timeless and appropriate to its moment in the way great art should. While \u003cem\u003eDeadly Struggle\u003c\/em\u003e is unmistakably hardcore punk, it doesn’t sound like anything else. Sure, there are reference points for certain things they do, and Public Acid is also part of a wave of bands like Tower 7 and Salvaje Punk making ugly fusions of raw international underground hardcore and metal, yet Public Acid stands alone. Their albums were only released on cassette, and remain impossible to source. This is an official reissue of their debut album from 1985. Musically this has the feel of American punk rock circa 1979-1981 when hardcore wasn’t the flavor of the day. Bands still had a foot in uncharted waters figuring it out. I guess it took longer for punk to migrate to the Philippines, as that’s exactly what’s happening on this album 5 years too late. A band inspired by the earliest punk and 70s rock, but figuring out how to take it a step further with their own unique local influences, and it’s absolutely awesome. Some of the Dangerhouse catalog with a bit of an edge, or early Dead Kennedys wouldn’t be a too out there comparison, but Dead Ends does their own style. Dialing up the intensity just a bit more, Dead Ends releases an album completely on par with their first in terms of quality, but if you like that “hard punk” sound between punk and hardcore, or early hardcore era of southern California bands this may tip the scales to being even better than their first. Comparisons to bands like early TSOL, Angry Samoans, or Stains (particularly in the way Dead Ends and Stains could both drop in an absolutely shredding solo or more technical guitar part and it sound totally cool and natural) get you to where Dead Ends is headed on this album, but as before, with their own unique style.
