I feel like this is less a conventional LP release and more of a monument to the greatness of Agnostic Front, or maybe even hardcore in general. I mean, the packaging on this is absolutely ridiculous. Radio Raheem is already well-known for their extensive packaging, but this takes the cake. It feels insulting to call what comes inside this thing an "insert" or a "booklet," because what it really is is a 12"x12" full-color book about Agnostic Front. It's as beautiful and captivating as Tony Rettman's recent book on NYHC, and while it does something very different--presenting primary source material from the earliest versions of Agnostic Front--it feels just as historically valid and important, and is self-conscious about that sense of importance and value. Basically, if you think that US hardcore is an important art or social movement you want to own this thing. As for the music, it's tempting to view it almost as an afterthought, but there are without a doubt some jams on this record. The material is actually previously released, but only on CD (and a particularly poorly designed and abysmally distributed CD at that). Most of Side A is devoted to a 1983 demo that finds the band at a very formative stage. In all honesty it's a total mess, and while it's fascinating to see how far the band would come in a year's time, I'm not sure it'll get a lot of play on my turntable. The last 17 songs, though, come from a 1984 demo recorded just a few months later and it's like a totally different band. Somewhere in there Agnostic Front figured out who they were, and suddenly you can believe that this is the band that would eventually make Victim in Pain. It's sort of akin to the transition Discharge made between their early, Sex Pistols-influenced stuff and Realities of War. So, yeah, at the end of the day this is pretty raging stuff, but really this is a package for people who like to ponder and pontificate about hardcore, and if you just read my ridiculously long spiel about this record then you're probably one of those people, so go ahead and buy it if you haven't already.

Exit Order's new EP steps away from the nonstop hardcore of their demo and shifts into a catchier UK82 meets Welcome to 1984 euro punk style.

Our take: Man, this is killer! Debut 7" from this Boston who pretty much take a whole bunch of things I love and smash them together into one absolutely scorching band/record. The basis here is hardcore not unlike the typical stock in trade of Side Two Records (not to mention similar labels like Beach Impediment, Painkiller, etc.), but there's so much more going on than your typical hardcore band. So many hardcore bands' songs sound way too same-y to me... like they had one idea of what the band would sound like and aren't willing to go outside of the overly restrictive boundaries that they've created for themselves, but Exit Order sound fully realized, packing an LPs worth of killer punk songwriting into a single 7". The riffs are just great, sometimes coming at you with that whirlwind of chords, "riffs inside of riffs" style, and other times able to back off and pound out a simple, catchy part when necessary (Jeff calls this the "money riff"). The rhythm section keeps things tight and bouncy... I'd say this reminds me of pogo punk like Sad Boys or Pox, but it's so much faster and more rhythmically varied than those bands that it feels like an injustice. But the star here is the vocalist... they're kind of high-pitched a la Sad Boys (or older bands like the Comes or Nog Watt), but at the same time they're so bruising and powerful. In a lot of modern hardcore bands the vocals work almost like the rhythm guitar, locking into a songs backbeat and just keeping the song marching forward, but Exit Control have bonafide sing-alongs. In case you can't tell, I'm pretty much over the moon about this 7"... without a doubt one of the punk records of the year, so get it dummy!

<span style="font-size: 13px; font-family: Arial;" data-sheets-value='[null,2,"A reissue of the 1982 The Curse of Zounds! I'm not sure if the hype machine is grinding as hard for this band as it once did, but I still place them firmly in the "fully backed" category. With a little bit of distance from that all hype, these songs sound even better to my ears than they did when Sheer Mag's name was on the tip of everyone's tongue. These are just great pop songs, and while the raw production that the band has favored thus far remains a love it or hate it proposition, I find it baffling that anyone can see this band as anything other than a pop songwriting machine. Listening to all of these songs on one LP you definitely hear changes across the 3 EPs... the 2nd EP has this real soulful, Jacksons 5 kind of vibe (even though the songs are more political and not love songs in the straightforward sense), while the third one has what sounds to me like a heavy, heavy Fleetwood Mac influence that suits the band really well. I really feel like these 3 EPs are some of the best records to come out of this era of punk, and unless you just hate pop music (and I know a lot of people do!) I think that you should give them a listen. This LP-sized compilation of the 3 7"s is as good a place as any to start. I'm not sure why it exists, really, as the 7"s have never really endured more than a few months at a time of being unavailable, but maybe they'll go out of print and this will replace them. The only real differences I can discern are that a few of the tracks are a little bit longer (matching the digital / bandcamp versions of the tracks rather than the slightly edited versions that appeared on the 7"s) and the mastering job on the 2nd EP tracks is much, much improved. If you already have the 3 EPs I'm not sure you really need this, but if you're just finding out about Sheer Mag or if one of the EPs slipped by you this serves its purpose exceedingly well.

<span data-sheets-userformat='{"2":513,"3":{"1":0},"12":0}' data-sheets-value="{"1":2,"2":"Writhing, sneering, tight cornered "Machine Response" the only acceptable follow up to the blistering and landmark "Attempted Suicide." Nearly ten years of beating around the bush, casually playing around the world and drip releasing music along the way, Career Suicide is backed by their best lineup ever, ready to break back through themselves with this new full length. I remember when I first heard their debut EP… it was a totally life-changing moment. While a slew of retro-styled bands would emerge over the next few years, Career Suicide were one of the very first, one of the most authentic, and certainly one of the best bands of the early 00s hardcore wave. What I responded to in particular was their emphasis on songwriting; lots of hardcore bands focus on heaviness or speed, but Career Suicide—on their best songs, at least—applied those traits to a classic pop formula. Over the years since their incredible last LP, Attempted Suicide, my tastes have drifted away from the retro USHC that Career Suicide helped to bring back, and subsequently I went into Machine Response wondering if I really needed a new Career Suicide record. Well, folks, it turns out I do, and you probably do too. I was skeptical that CS would be able to top Attempted Suicide, which not only had a consistently stronger level of songwriting than their previous releases, but also had the brilliant drumming of the late Brandon Ferrell to help put it over the top. However, top Attempted Suicide they do, delivering what is simultaneously their catchiest and most aggressive set of songs. Not only is the songwriting at least as strong as it was on Attempted Suicide (if not stronger), but Machine Response also finds Career Suicide taking a lot of really exciting risks. First of all, there’s “Blank Expression,” perhaps the best song on the record, which strikes a different tone than any CS song to date. It’s dense and dark guitar melody reminds me of Naked Raygun at their catchiest and most melancholic (tracks like “Treason” or “Vanilla Blue”), and it’s honestly a little bit emo, which is not something I ever thought I’d say about a Career Suicide song. The other unexpected wrinkle here is the lead guitar playing. Jonah has been a brilliant guitarist even longer than he’s been a great drummer, but the leads on Machine Response are just next-level… subtle and inventive, but still just as powerful as you expect and want them to be. Finally, I also want to point to the power of the ensemble playing on display here. The liner notes are a little unclear about whether or not it’s actually the new lineup playing on these recordings or not, but whoever is playing these instruments they sound absolutely great, as locked-in and in-the-pocket a hardcore punk record as you’ve ever heard, all the more remarkable because Career Suicide’s characteristic velocity hasn’t been diminished at all. Machine Response has been on constant rotation since it arrived, and I dare say that with a few months of repeated listens this could replace Attempted Suicide as my go-to CS record.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0255/7539/products/IMG_0777_f218941e-46c4-46f5-b418-8441b897d479.jpg?v=1488322875
poison-idea-war-all-the-time-12-new
Poison Idea: War All the Time 12"

<span data-sheets-userformat='{"2":513,"3":{"1":0},"12":0}' data-sheets-value="{"1":2,"2":"The lost classic returns!! I remember when I first dove head-first into full-on Poison Idea obsession in the late 90s it was their most difficult album to get… records like Pick Your King and Darby Crash Rides Again had gone through multiple pressings and turned up pretty readily (if for a premium price) on the secondary market, while 12”s like Record Collectors Are Pretentious Assholes, Kings of Punk, and Feel the Darkness got repressed by labels like Taang! and Farewell. However, aside from those CD reissues with vastly inferior artwork, War All the Time was impossible to get, and it took me a few years to lay my hands on a copy. Well, that gross oversight has now been remedied as War All the Time is the latest of PI’s records to be given the reissue treatment by TKO Records. In addition to the discographical considerations outlined above, War All the Time also stands out in the discography for being the only full-length to feature Eric “Vegetable” Olsen on guitar (who also wrote music for a few of the tracks, including the jaunty piano romp “Ritual Chicken”). It’s funny, I feel like War All the Time would almost make more sense if it had come out before Kings of Punk. While Olsen’s metallic lead guitar is a new wrinkle for the band, the songwriting here actually feels a little more straightforward than it did on Kings of Punk, with fewer tempo changes and more of a steady, Motorhead-esque tempo (incidentally, they also cover the song “Motorhead” on this album), whereas Feel the Darkness would have more of the varied songwriting you hear on Kings of Punk. I mean, at the end of the day, all of this is some navel-gazing, hair-splitting shit… this is a Poison Idea record, and even if you’re not a superfan you pretty much have to acknowledge that everything up to Feel the Darkness is totally essential. This reissue brings it back onto vinyl where it belongs, with a layout that hews close to the original with a few subtle changes (like a reconfigured photo collage on the insert and an alternate shot from the same session for the back cover photo). If you like hardcore this album should be in your collection, and if you’re not lucky, old, rich, and/or a big enough nerd to have the original this will do you just fine.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0255/7539/products/IMG_2693_e1de7081-9919-4efa-b013-9dd2d5c93ba6.jpg?v=1489104672
wretched-7-eps-box-set
Wretched: Libero E Selvaggio 7" box set

<span data-sheets-value='{"1":2,"2":"This 4 x 7"es box set will contain the split 7" with Indigesti (only the Wretched side) on black vinyl, the "In Nome Del Loro Potere" 7" EP on red vinyl, the "Finirà Mai" 7" EP on blue vinyl and the "In Controluce" single 7" in milky clear vinyl. The attention to detail in every aspect of this release is apparent, from the powerful sound reproduction to the vintage-looking layout to the incredibly informative sleeve notes. If you’re the kind of person who picks up everything on Radio Raheem Records just because, you will no doubt be very pleased with this as well. Anyway, Life’s Blood have sort of an interesting place in the history of hardcore, straddling two competing scenes in a way, since they appeared on the New Breed and NYHC: Where the Wild Things Are compilations (and regularly played with the other bands featured on those comps), but they also regularly antagonized that very scene (and the adjacent Revelation Records / youth crew scene) and their guitarist would go on to Born Against after the band ended. So, in my head, I think of Life’s Blood as the band that gets you all of the ignorant pleasure of listening to NYHC but with some of the hippie-ish vibe of the early 90s ABC No Rio scene. However, revisiting this material for the first time in a few years (I was lucky enough to pick up the Vermiform pressing of Defiance for a buck like 15+ years ago), I’m struck by how closely Life’s Blood stick to the early 80s NYHC formula. While bands like Breakdown, Raw Deal, Absolution, and others were moving in a more metallic direction, Life’s Blood has very little of that, pretty much taking Victim in Pain as their template (sometimes a little too closely for comfort), adding in some occasional Negative Approach-type oi influences (which are particularly apparent on the compilation tracks that appear toward the end of side one of this LP). Over the past 20 years or so the hardcore scene has divided to the point where the bands that the New Breed-type bands influenced are pretty much a completely separate scene from more early 80s-inspired hardcore, but Life’s Blood still seem like a band that people from both of those scenes can agree on, the tattooed moshers digging on the Don Fury production while the punks like the AF-style whiplash tempo changes and early 80s-style minimalism. At any rate, this is a beautifully-executed reissue that’ll do you just fine whether you’re a Life’s Blood super-fan or whether you’re just discovering the band.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0255/7539/products/IMG_1405_2000x_b510d827-7b29-43fc-bc55-eb8389c2e80f.jpg?v=1496010288
sheer-mag-need-to-feel-your-love-12
Sheer Mag: Need to Feel Your Love 12"

A tear in the firmament.
Beyond the noxious haze of our national nightmare - as structures of social justice and global progress topple in our midst - there lies a faint but undeniable glow in the distance.
What is it?
Like so many before us we are drawn to the beacon. Tarantula are exploring a space that not a lot of bands are interested in these days… if the words didn’t have such terrible associations I would call this “melodic hardcore,” i.e. music that has the speed and the gritty sound of early 80s hardcore but relies on the more traditional pop song structure of classic punk rock. The only band I can think of off the top of my head who is doing something similar is Night Birds, but Tarantula is a lot tougher and meaner-sounding. While one might consider the idea of catchy, song-oriented hardcore to be completely played out, Tarantula toe the line between poppy and aggressive so perfectly that their music feels fresh. You can hear the influences quite clearly—the snotty, aggressive punk of bands like the Angry Samoans and Zero Boys, the earnest drive of early 80s midwest hardcore like Articles of Faith and early Husker Du, and a dash of Devo / Geza X-style irreverence—but they’re swirled together in a way that’s just different enough from anything I’ve heard before to be noteworthy.

<span data-sheets-value='{"1":2,"2":"Originally pressed in 1996 PROFANE EXISTENCE is bringing this quintessential anarcho-punk masterpiece back in circulation.

In 1996 AUS-ROTTEN released their first LP “The System Works For Them” on an unsuspecting punk scene. Actually, it sounds like there was a fair bit more involved with the restoration project than that. Since the original album was recorded with triggered kick and snare drums, it sounds like they had to completely reconstruct the drum tracks using modern, more natural-sounding samples. So, how good of a job did they do? Well, the first thing that I did was pull my original copy of the album off the shelf (actually it’s the original Dutch pressing on Konkurrel, but I can’t imagine it sounds that much different than the UK version) and give it a listen. I have to say it doesn’t sound nearly as bad as I remember. Certainly the whole thing is very muggy sounding and the tracks are overly compressed, making it sound like you’re hearing the band rehearsing in the next room, but you can hear the drums well enough that tracks like the ripping opener “Consume” still have quite a lot of impact. I mean, despite all of the problems with the record, it’s still pretty legendary and I’ve kept a copy for myself all these years so it’s not like it’s total crap. However, throwing on the reissue you immediately hear a vast improvement. The whole thing sounds clearer and brighter, and the mix is more even; on the original the guitar is way too loud and the bass is essentially inaudible. The drums in particular are a huge improvement… in particular, the snare doesn’t dominate the drum mix in the way that it does on the original. Interestingly, the improved sound makes for a radically different and much improved overall listening experience. I’ve always enjoyed the standout tracks on Face Up to It like “Consume,” the title track, “Network of Friends,” and “Trapped in a Scene,” but the lesser tracks always struck me as very forgettable, even on my most recent listen to the original pressing. Of course the standout tracks still sound great on the reissue, but tracks like “Too Close to Home,” “Against the Grain,” or “Into the Grey,” which never made much of an impression on me before, now stand out as absolute scorchers that approach (and perhaps even meet) the sheer blinding speed and ferocity of From Enslavement to Obliteration-era Napalm Death. It’s something of a cliche to say that listening to an updated reissue is like hearing a record for the first time, but the cliche holds true for this particular reissue, and if you are a fan of this album I can’t see any reason why you would ever listen to the original version again after hearing this, which is something I can’t recall saying about very many hardcore punk reissues in the past, especially ones that seek to “improve” fundamentally flawed records. I should also mention that in addition to the vastly improved original album, you also get an additional 1-sided 12” that includes what I believe are outtakes from the recording sessions, including a bunch of covers of bands like DYS and Siege, rerecorded old tracks like “Never Healed,” and a few other bits and bobs from the cutting room floor. And then there’s the liner notes and repackaging, which are tastefully done even if they aren’t quite as on-the-nose authentic as, say, the reissues on Radio Raheem. Basically, if you like Heresy, the late 80s UK hardcore/thrash/grindcore scene, or the late 80s proto-grind/power violence scene of bands like Larm, Ripcord, and Infest this is a highly recommended purchase.

<span data-sheets-value='{"1":2,"2":"“Beton Nostalgie” is a collection of songs released on various EP and split records. 18 songs from their Demo, Litovsk split, UVPR compilation song, Desert Urbain, BMAB single serie and Urban Savage split. When most Americans hear the phrase “French oi! band” their mind probably jumps to Rixe, but Syndrome 81 don’t sound much like Rixe at all, at least most of the time. Sure, there are similarities (particularly on their earlier tracks, originally released on cassette way back in 2013) as both bands are steeped in their native country’s long tradition of oi! music. However, while Rixe seem like perfectionists, whittling down each part of the song until it fits into the Rixe aesthetic, Syndrome 81 are more willing to go out on a limb with their songwriting. By the third track on this release, “Recouvrance,” the band is experimenting with criss-crossing melodic lines on the guitar and bass and more melancholic, minor-key chord progressions. While oi! has a reputation for being restrictive as a genre (one might even say dumb), Syndrome 81 incorporate a wide range of sounds, tones, and textures. It always still sounds like oi!, but oi! in wide screen. In this respect Syndrome 81 reminds me of the Beltones, another band who wasn’t afraid to expand the oi! formula to incorporate dark, melodic pop in the Leatherface vein.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0255/7539/products/Image_from_iOS_5_copy_dc6cd39e-46d2-43e8-b3ec-8eb8e36ab538.jpg?v=1582741188
crippled-youth-join-the-fight-7-28-page-booklet
Crippled Youth: Join the Fight 7" + 28-page booklet

<span data-sheets-value="{"1":2,"2":"Before they were called Bold, this K-Town mosh crew were originally known as Crippled Youth. "Join The Fight Fight" was their debut EP as well as the first release for up and coming West Coast hardcore label New Beginning Records (Underdog, Halfoff, P.H.C.), recorded in late 1985 and released in 1986.
