Originally released in 1996, The Great Southern Trendkill is an often overlooked album in the Pantera catalog especially considering it had the difficult task of following up the band's consecutive classics Vulgar Display of Power (1992) and Far Beyond Driven (1994). The weight of album expectations led to internal conflicts within the band, resulting in Phil Anselmo recording his vocals at Trent Reznor's Nothing Studios in New Orleans while the rest of the band recorded the music at Dimebag Darrell's studio in Dallas. Despite the unorthodox recording process, the material herein is as heavy hitting and uncompromising as anything the band has ever done, awash in lightning fast tempos and down-tuned guitars galore, altogether anchored by top notch performances from Vinnie Paul and Dimebag Darrell.
