Intimidating and foul, ridden with feedback, lurching and slamming, screeching and boiling over. There's no hint of youthfulness here, instead lurks a fearful incarnation of hardcore punk at it's darkest and most foul. One moment disciplined, the next a sprawling chaos. Straightjacket Nation stands alone, a horrible entity carved out in stone. Mean. Strict. Remorseless. Vengeful. Harsh. On their previous records, SJN wore their Cleveland influences proudly on their collective sleeve, with a sound clearly grounded in the nihilistic thrash of bands like 9 Shocks Terror and H100s. This time around, though, it sounds to me like they’ve transcended those influences. On the one hand there’s a distinct Gauze vibe running through this record… no one out there really sounds like Gauze, and bands who try to imitate their whiplash tempo changes usually end up sounding mathy. However, there’s something of that vibe here, even if it’s hard to put my finger on what precisely it is. It’s hardly straight Gauze worship, though, as there’s also a strong thread of more modern hardcore running through the record. The combination of the Gauze-esque changes and more modern-sounding breakdown parts means that this ends up sounding like a noisier, more chaotic of that Omegas LP that came out on Beach Impediment a few months ago. This is probably a little more punk and a little less hardcore, but it definitely appeals to a similar sensibility, and is just as killer as you would expect any release on LVEUM to be.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0255/7539/products/IMG_0867_d681e9a1-09ec-46ba-a3f8-d9ac05d42c26.jpg?v=1489526166
rixe-collection-12
Rixe: Collection 12"

<span data-sheets-value="{"1":2,"2":"Collection neatly compiles RIXE's first 3 Eps on one album. Like a lot of bands from Barcelona, Ultra have a progressive sound with lots of twists, turns, and intricacies in the songwriting. That‚Äôs not to say they don‚Äôt rage; like ¬†Osservati Dall'Inganno-era Indigesti (or that record‚Äôs obvious inspiration, the Bad Brains), the intricacies increase the power rather than provide a break from it. If you like lightning-fast, stop on a dime hardcore you‚Äôll love the tight playing and clear and powerful recording, but my favorite parts are when the band spreads out. The guitar solos are a treat, with the title track‚Äôs wild, whammy bar-heavy lead reminding me of a weird, progressive thrash band like Nocturnus. I also love the Sunn-esque droning intro to ‚ÄúEstado Vital,‚Äù and the two electronic pieces on the record are also a pleasant breather. The verse-chorus songwriting, the raw set-up of 2-synths-and-a-beat, and the primal rhythms nod to the duo’s background in punk. But Terra Alta has a pensive and mesmeric quality, provided in part by an outstanding production job (Studio AS One, Warsaw), but also by lyrics concerning themselves with themes of love, time travel, reflections on the future, the power of imagination and the mysteries of the natural world. While both members come from a punk background, you won't find any of that here… this is full-on synth-pop played entirely on synths and drum machines (well, except for the vocals). When music like this is poorly executed it can sound cold, synthetic, and/or flat, but Fatamorgana have none of those problems. The sound is lush and layered, with snappy drums and deep bass. The overall vibe reminds me of a more human, organic-sounding version of early Human League with a dash of Boy Harsher’s noir-tinged futurism, while the songs themselves get buried in your head just as a good pop song should. Pathetic Flesh is an intense explosion of a record, chucking up the rudimentary stomp of Fever, the brawny pogo of Bootlicker, the panic-stricken downhill rush of the title track. This bulldozer approach gives moments of Pathetic Flesh an early death metal vibe, which I imagine isn’t an influence so much as a common approach of making music as primitive, brutal, and punishing as possible. More obvious influences are early Agnostic Front (particularly on the first track) and S.H.I.T.’s catchy pogo-hardcore (“Bootlicker”). For me, the highlights are the off-kilter main riff on “Paranoia Puremania” and the cacophonous closing track “Riastrad,” which reminds me of the reprise of the title track at the end of Discharge’s Why?. The closing trio of “So”, “Far” and “Down” tunnels on and takes place as some sorta on-acid-and-caught-in-earthquake rite, that sees the volcanic pounding intensify and whatever THAT sound is (bass guitar?? some demonic synthesiser??!) begin to envelop everything like the swelling of oblivion - any brief interval between tracks serving only as a moment to observe your own mind try to scramble it’s way out of the slowly opening sinkhole.

Bonkers. In fact, Time on Earth is one of the weirder, more esoteric records that has come across my desk lately, more akin to the outsider music on a label like Ever/Never than what you’d expect to hear from these people or this label. Trying to describe Slender’s sound is a fool’s errand, but primitive drum machines overlaid with acoustic guitar are the core of many of the tracks. Usually they overlay those tracks with some other combination of sounds, including (but not limited to) electric guitar, synth, sampled vocals, singing, and bowed string instruments (violin and/or cello?). “New Country” is the only track I’d call a song as such; the rest are more like free-flowing auditory experiments that flow from part to part in a way that’s experimental and/or symphonic. Many of the tracks are short, but I particularly like the three longer tracks that end the album which unfold gradually in a way that makes time seem to slow down. When I first listened to Time on Earth I definitely had some trouble wrapping my mind around it, but it got its hooks into me and it’s become a regular listen. While Permission can sound chaotic and unhinged upon first listen, when you pay close attention you realize that the songs are intricate and ornate, riffs piled upon riffs piled upon changes with extra bits added and subtracted just to keep it as confusing as possible. It sounds like the band is trying to play as fast as they can, or more specifically that the band is trying to keep up with the blindingly fast guitar playing, which lunges ahead of the beat, giving the music the thrilling uncertainty of a house of cards about to topple. The Astronauts were (and are, after close to 30 years and a history of lineup shifts only bested by The Fall) the definitive psych-punk ensemble, though even that title doesn’t do ’em justice. Their sound culminates the post ’77 punk dabblings of head forbears Twink (his ‘Do it 77′ single and The Rings’ ‘I wanna be free’ platter), Nik Turner (the outstanding Inner City Unit and the ‘punkier’ late 70’s bits of Hawkwind) and Daevid Allen’s planet Gong (with fellow acid-punkers Here and Now) all woven in with an earlier Robert Wyatt / mellow candle-y psych folk vibe… While not sounding like any of those things at all. They can be repositories for throwaway material, they can lead listeners into an unfavorable comparison between the two sides of the record in which no one wins, and with multiple bands collaborating they are often conceptually muddled. However, Skopje vs Sheffield has none of those problems. It is a perfect hardcore record that just happens also to be a split record. It’s telling that every single time I’ve played this record (which is a lot), I’ve listened to it all the way through. I don’t think you’ll see anyone calling this a one-sided 12”. Nervous SS (from Skopje, Macedonia) and Rat Cage (from Sheffield, UK) are two perfectly matched bands, both playing Totalitär-influenced d-beat hardcore with elements that push at the edges of that sound. Listening to Skopje vs Sheffield reminds me of examining a Nick Blinko drawing in that, from a distance, it can seem monochromatic, but when you zoom in, each hatch mark (or, on the record, each riff) is its own magical little world, and these magical little worlds are woven seamlessly into a complex tapestry. Although each band contributes a side, Skopje vs Sheffield even has an arc like a great full-length, with a clear climax (Rat Cage’s track “Persecution”) and ending with an awesome comedown (the long, melodic guitar solo that closes Rat Cage’s UK Subs cover). The reason we search out records and bands from all over the globe is because we’re interested in those people’s perspectives… we want to understand better what the world looks like through their eyes. I was pretty fucking stoked on this record before I knew what the words meant. (To tell the whole truth, I wasn’t even sure what language they were in. They’re in Bahasa, an Indonesian language that Google Translate seems to have no trouble with. “Reaksi” means “reaction” and “Esok Hari Kepunyaan Kita” translates as “Tomorrow Is Ours.”) Reaksi cops a lot of moves from the No Future catalog (particularly the Partisans and Blitz), but they do it well, with the same anthemic sensibility of Rixe but with a tougher edge… I’d bet money these folks really appreciate the Ultra Violent EP. I was in a negative headspace, but as soon as I listened to this record, I felt energized. This record is so exciting, so daring, and so powerful. Singapore’s Sial has always been on the artier end of the spectrum, pulling from the same well of inspiration as bands like Lebenden Toten or Horrendous 3D, taking Confuse and Gai-style noise-punk and emphasizing that style’s psychedelic elements. However, the two tracks on Zaman Edan go way beyond that. And it is long; you might assume a two-song single would be a concise statement, but Zaman Edan has a stretched out, epic quality; a maximalist single… a contradiction in terms… a paradox. Things clicked for Koma when I sat down with the vinyl, as they do with a lot of records. The dense, monochromatic illustration on the cover where there are distinct skeletal shapes, but it’s tough to tell where one element ends and another begins; the dimly lit band photo on the back cover where you can only just discern human shapes in a dark, medieval-looking building; the murky production that refuses to cede attention to any one element, a writhing sonic morass; the fractured lyrics that touch on themes like isolation and the supernatural, but resist efforts to wrench easily summarizable meaning from them… Koma’s sound and visual aesthetic are woven from the same cloth. Their music feels introverted, troubled, even hard to listen to at times, which is a strange emotional register for hardcore to occupy. And Koma is hardcore… loud, fast, and heavy, but with none of the grandstanding or feel-good vibes you get from other points on the genre’s lengthy continuum. Like those bands, Unidad Ideológica has a magical talent for capturing energy on record, with these eight tracks leaping from the speakers like they’re breaking loose from a high-pressure container. While the sound is visceral and immediate, it’s also layered and dynamic, encompassing everything from black metal-style melodic tremolo picking (“Metadata”), Broken Bones-esque metallic d-beat “Tercer Hito Del Desarollo” and full-on Discharge worship (the “A Look at Tomorrow”-ish “Vidas Controlidas”). Unidad Ideológica’s ability to work these elements into such a seamless and distinctive style reminds me of those people who look stylish no matter what they’re wearing, whether it’s a sweatsuit or head-to-toe lycra. Since their emergence onto the scene 7 or 8 years ago, the band’s discography boasts 3 full-length LPs and a couple of 7”s. Their self-titled first release on Svart Records presented listeners with 6 blazing tracks of noisy, chaotic raw punk. Even from the beginning, it was clear the band was hellbent on dismantling any notion of formula. Over the course of their 3 LPs, you can hear Kohti Tuhoa expand their sound and bring a fresh sonic identity with each release. I remember hearing the Elä Totuudesta EP from last year and thinking it was their strongest release. Their songwriting seemed to move in a more tuneful direction, but Elä Totuudesta only hinted at the experimentation on their brand new EP Väkivaltaa. The opening track “Suden Hetki” is a minute-long instrumental that functions like a brooding, ambient mood piece to set the tone. Then we launch into “Häpeä,” which is unique to any song Kohti Tuhoa has ever released. Drawing more inspiration from anarcho and post-punk, the propulsive, driving drum beat and cold, melodic sensibility recalls early Killing Joke. In direct contrast, the B-side serves up 3 tracks of explosive and chaotic hardcore—but not chaotic like the noisy, crusty sound of their previous releases. The band seems to have broken down creative barriers, throwing ideas against the wall and, as a result, they’ve put together a batch of inventive and well-orchestrated crushers that feel unusual and exciting. Their sound is rooted firmly in Punk but with influences that run across the board to create a distinctive blend of Oi!, anarcho, UK-82 and hardcore. It’s one of many songs influenced by singer Cal’s experiences of growing up in the working-class town of Blackpool. I hear some similarity in the blown-out distortion of the guitars, but Barrera primarily plays at slower, more menacing tempos. The opening song “Confusa La Historia” begins with a swell that leads into a thick, permeable wall of noise. The pounding drum groove is heavy on the toms and pulses with a mechanical, marching-like rhythm. And while the drums hold everything in order, the song feels like a tense beckoning for disorderly conduct. On the surface, Barrera is mostly easily described as a hardcore band. But much like La Vida says in their description, with their restrained, brooding sense of doom, the band evokes a feeling that is alluring, sexual, and dangerous. The singer fumes with this disdainful and hypnotic persuasion that forces the listener to be engaged, but also terrified. The songs collected on this 12” are like a ceremonial gathering around a funeral pyre. I imagine someone being burned at the stake. The sound creates such a powerful illusion of dread. Faster songs like “Apocalypse Now” and “Stagnant Fools” sound like crasher crust, raw and primal gestalt in the vein of Gloom, Framtid, and early Anti-Cimex. However, Mock Execution is also excellent with a mid-paced song, whether it’s a Kaaos-style fist-pumper like “Insanity” or the more chugging, Totalitär-esque “Calm in the Chaos.” Things can also get pretty metal, as on the epic intro for “Enough Is Enough,” but whatever the tempo and style, everything is wrapped in the raw and urgent production and playing style I associate with the 80s scenes in South America and Italy. While my description probably makes Mock Execution sound scattered, it all adds up to a distinctive voice that sounds like no one else. I don’t want to get into too detailed of a comparison between the two records because they’re very different and don’t seem in dialog with one another in any substantial way, but one subtle yet noticeable difference is that while L.O.T.I.O.N. feels like a pop record with its chanted choruses and danceable beats, Ä.I.D.S. feels more like a rock record that’s built around riffs. A lot of the riffs remind me of Discharge songs like “State Violence, State Control,” elongated musical phrases that rely on chugging palm muting. We used to have this joke in one of my old bands that some riffs make you feel like you’re riding a chopper over the horizon at sunset, and that’s the case with a lot of these, giving them that badass “Motorcharged” feel so many bands aim for. Even better, while those longer riffs were a sign of Discharge’s imminent decline, Ä.I.D.S. is at pains to keep things maximally heavy and brutal. Everything is big and heavy, with the pounding drum machine rhythms and synth squelches pushing the vibe to something between Mad Max and cyberpunk. While Rat Cage works with a lot of the same influences as other contemporary hardcore bands, their songwriting and execution are just on another level. “In the Shadow of the Bomb” is a case in point. The song’s massive and memorable main riff and shout-along chorus would have, on their own, outclassed 90% of hardcore bands, but the song has this part in the middle with a subtle key change that takes it to a whole different level. It’s like a middle eight in a classic pop song… what other hardcore bands have songs with middle eights? Rat Cage changes things up a little on the second track, “Scared of the Truth,” though that song is built around a riff at least as memorable as “In the Shadow of the Bomb,” sounding like Diamond Head doing their own take on “State Violence, State Control.” This song also has a great middle section that employs some Adolescents-esque melodies in the upper octaves. I am a fan of Lindsay’s band Sauna Youth, and while Violin’s angry hardcore doesn’t have much in common with Sauna Youth’s eclectic sound on the surface, there are high levels of skill and artistic ambition apparent in both projects. Not that this is prog or anything—the intro riff to “Empty Mind” is about as straightforward as you can get—but by the end of that very song there’s a synth whirring out a sinister melodic line where you’d expect the Ginn-influenced atonal lead to go. On Sangkar, Sial returns to shorter songs, but the experimental tendencies are still there, resulting in a scorching six-song EP that has it all. One thing that seems unique to Sial, though, is how they can hit the pause button on the relentless forward motion and drop into these weightless-feeling drone parts for just a moment. It’s like they splice a few bars of Neu! into their hardcore song, and even though they only do this for short stretches on Sangkar, those parts still feel as hypnotic as the best psychedelia, particularly when Sial brings in some auxiliary percussion, as they do to great effect on “Tali,” “Sia-Sia,” and “Mana.” Thanks to this ability, Sial has a unique take on the cycle of tension and release that so many hardcore bands lean on. All this comes together on the brilliant first track, “Tali.” There’s this middle section where the band goes into one of those hypnotic parts (augmented with what sounds like hand bells), building the tension until they drop back into the song’s brilliant main riff, swapping out the verses’ brisk rhythms with a pulverizing mosh beat. For me, that moment is as good as hardcore gets. Angry, nasty anarchist tunes which could fit right in on Welcome to 1984, P.E.A.C.E. or any of the Attack Punk compilations.

Our take: Well, this rips. Tàrrega 91’s debut sounds like a lost artifact from the early 80s, capturing not just the sound of the initial worldwide hardcore explosion, but also the crackling energy and excitement. LVEUM’s description mentions Discharge’s first few EPs, and something about Fill De La Merda makes me think of the Decontrol EP, the way it’s raw and vicious, but the energy takes precedence over the heaviness. Today’s Discharge-influenced hardcore bands tend to draw more from the denser, more layered sound on Why? and Hear Nothing See Nothing Say Nothing, but Tàrrega 91’ is comparatively barebones, the production recalling the vérité recordings that made early 80s punk records from Finland, Sweden, Washington, DC, Italy, and so many other places so great. There’s so much I love about this EP, but it’s hard to pin down what elevates it above the pack. The great recording, simple but elegantly crafted songs, and intense and energetic performances are all part of it, but ultimately it’s something ineffable, some unseen hand that has reached down from the heavens (or perhaps up from the depths) and blessed this recording with the true spirit of hardcore punk. Play this record as loud as you can and tell me you don’t hear it.
Seven long years have passed since Barcelona beauties Belgrado last bestowed a full length upon the citizens of Planet Earth, but the wait is over, and ‘Intra Apogeum’ is here to make your life worth living again.

With a new bassist in tow, a couple of fresh-out-the-box synths, and drummer Jonathan Sirit switching from kit-bashing to button-pushing, you might be forgiven for thinking your favourite post-punkers have gone cuckoo and lost it. But fear not – more than a decade in the game and Belgrado still know What They Are Doing. Eight sleek-n-chic numbers that simultaneously burn white hot and ice cold. As with their previous record ‘Obraz’, Belgrado have taken the Xmal Banshees template and bled out in all directions, stylishly blending a classic post-punk intuition with elements of disco, dub and psychedelia, now with added textures of electronic lushness.

Recorded in both Barcelona and singer Patrcyja Proniewska’s native Warsaw, ‘Intra Apogeum’ is testament to a band committed to pushing forward and investigating the new whilst clearly demonstrating they know who they are. Belgrado is back – viva Belgrado!

Our take: The seven years since Belgrado’s last LP have seen some significant changes for the Barcelona group. Most importantly, their rhythm section has gotten a complete overhaul with drummer Jonathan Sirit abandoning acoustic drums in favor of electronic rhythm programming and Louis from Fatamorgana joining the band on bass (meaning now Belgrado’s lineup now includes both members of Fatamorgana). These changes are a big deal because the rhythm section has always been a key part of Belgrado’s sound, with bass and drums laying a firm foundation over which the guitars, synths, and vocals float more ethereally. That’s still the approach on Intra Apogeum, but it’s like the rhythm section sees their job in the same way but executes that job differently. It’s a best-case scenario, giving the group an infusion of freshness without undermining one of their key strengths. And Louis’s bass lines sound fantastic… I almost wonder if he’s flexing a bit, as some of the bass lines here are ridiculously complex (see “Tęsknota,” to cite but one example). Meanwhile, in the upper registers, Belgrado also pushes forward, with an even wider pallet of guitar and synth sounds and Patrcyja’s icy yet melodic vocals tying it all together. While their rhythms still have a powerful thump, I love that they also draw from genres like dub and psych, creating interwoven layers of sound with a variety of captivating textures. Intra Apogeum is an album that pulls you into its world, and I think it’s the best Belgrado album yet.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0255/7539/files/belgrado_270f4ec2-a124-4928-a8e2-1bf0949b75ef.jpg?v=1721580232
rat-cage-savage-visions-12-sorry-state-xclusive-orange-vinyl
Rat Cage: Savage Visions 12" (Sorry State Exclusive Orange Vinyl)

Yorkshire's most Honorable Master of Mangel brings to bear upon us the sophomore RAT CAGE full-length, an anxiety-compounding white-knuckle ride through the nauseating experience commonly known as trying to get by. On SAVAGE VISIONS, listeners are exposed to the maniacal cries of the critically-minded individual pushed to the absolute brink, copping rapid fire tidings of woe belted out by an unhinged unit who has finally ceased to give a fuck. Here we find Bryan of Sheffield, defiant and desperate on what is by far the most sinister, claustrophobic, reckless and dynamic release in the RAT CAGE catalogue to date. Though it may be full of huge sing-along-moments and loaded with surprises, SAVAGE VISIONS is no party, because there's nothing to celebrate. The boisterous resilience and boozy joy of previous works has vanished. With the rule book shattering the window of the '82nd floor, SAVAGE VISIONS lashes out at times towards the not-too-distant sounds of VENOM, MIDNIGHT and later DARKTHRONE, expertly folding these riff expressions back in to the irresistibly dysfunctional bop of GBH and CRUCIFIX.

Anyone who chucks this thing on is going to feel like the passenger in a car crash waiting to happen. The record comes to us from La Vida Es Un Mus, and serves as another strong entry in the label’s underrated repertoire of pop bangers, alongside underground faves like Rata Negra, Fatamorgana, and Belgrado. Rata Negra fans in particular should check out Miss España, as Violeta from that band sings and plays synth in Miss España. The songs have a similar vibe, too, with strong, memorable vocal melodies perfectly cut with a dash of melancholy. That sense of balance is also apparent in the band’s instrumentation, with the rhythm section laying down a very organic, Ramones-like foundation for the synths. The label’s description mentions the Spits and Rip Off Records and I hear that in the jittery 16th notes, but it’s tinny in an almost industrial way that makes me think of Metal Urbain or the Screamers. As important as the frantic rhythms and noisy textures are the hooky vocals, which are bathed in distortion but brimming with melody. I also love that there are six songs here... they’re in and out quickly, but cover a lot of range, from the bashing hardcore tracks like “Show Me” to the more tuneful “Head in a Vat” and the brooding “The Shrew.” Energy, hooks, distortion… what’s not to like?
