Altering the future of Memphis rap and the future of rap itself, the 1995 release of Three Six Mafia's Mystic Stylez marked the first commercial offering from a future Academy Award-winning supergroup that formed through the merger of DJ Paul and Juicy J, two of Memphis' most popular mixtape DJs in the early 90's. Influenced by the likes of N.W.A., Geto Boys, Willie Hutch, KRS-One and Isaac Hayes, "Da Summa" served as the duo's first song to hit radio. "Mystic Stylez brought together horrorcore raps and occult themes with production that would sound right at home in a John Carpenter film," writes Complex." DJ Paul and Juicy J produced the album in its entirety and created a haunting soundscape in doing so. The two mastered the foreboding sound in their beats, but also showed their versatility with creations like the solemn "Da Summa" or the funky vibes on "All or Nothin."
