I hadn't spun Tragedy in ages and I've been pretty much obsessed with it since this came in to the shop. I'm not sure if it's because I had the Swedish version of this LP (which apparently suffers from an inferior mix) or what, but really I've never been grabbed by this record like I am now. I think that what really sticks out, weirdly enough, is how un-Discharge-like it is in many ways. While obviously you could point toward any number of blatant Discharge nods on this (or any other Disclose) record, so many aspects of the songwriting are things that Discharge never did, or things that Discharge did but they're tweaked slightly in a way that makes them stand out against the background of total d-beat worship. It's an incredibly subtle thing that's difficult to pinpoint and articulate, but at the end of the day it's these subtleties that are the x-factor that separates a band like Disclose--who were as exciting and as vital as punk music gets--from bands who imitate other bands' sounds or styles in ways that are obvious, boring, and/or goofy. Stuart Schrader touches upon this point in his excellent liner notes to Yesterday's Fairytale, Tomorrow's Nightmare, so if you're interested in the philosophical underpinnings of d-beat you'll definitely want to read that. At the time it was (and it still might be) the best Skemäta song, perfectly showcasing what is totally unique about the band. Unafraid to incorporate blatantly melodic elements into their foundation of crushing d-beat, Skemäta's consistent genre-busting make them a band for the cognoscenti of the d-beat scene. You can't just listen to them and immediately recognize what they're doing... the music has depth, and requires more of you as a listener than just passive recognition. While it may take a little while to adjust your ears to those melodic elements and all of the complex, almost prog-changes, the rewards for doing so are immeasurably high. That sense of quirkiness also extends into the lyrics and (particularly) the lead guitar playing as well, which has a quirky sensibility that definitely doesn't rely on the harmonies you might expect. Of course all of this quirkiness means that Stun Event don't have the fist-pumping directness that Out Cold has, but particularly if you appreciate precise, inventive playing I think that the rewards of this 7" can be just as great as much of Out Cold's material. Blackball are total go for the throat music, and the super raw recording here only accentuates their viciousness.

Click here to listen to this EP on the Sorry State BandCamp.

"I may have a million ways of saying brutal, but Life. Iron Lung. Death. has left me damn near speechless. Anyone who reads this zine (InMusicWeTrust.com) with any frequency knows that I live for IRON LUNG. In fact, I have been known to mark time by using IRON LUNG releases as reference points. Some of you may have thought me a bit daft. Some of you may have thought I 'overdid' it in my praise of the band. Well, HA HA HA! Once you listen to this album, you'll see that I was RIGHT and you were WRONG! There simply aren't enough words of praise in the English language for me to adequately sing the praises of this album. Jon and Jensen have outdone themselves. Literally. Some of the moments on this are the fastest IRON LUNG have ever tackled and others are the most sludge filled. So many extreme bands seem to reach a cruising speed early in their careers and then just ride it out. IRON LUNG, by contrast, keeps pushing harder and faster each year. The band takes the momentum of the split LP with LANA DAGALES (the band's finest work until now) and cranks everything up one more notch. If you are one of the unlucky ones who have not yet learned to breathe with an IRON LUNG, then this is the perfect album to start with."—Jeb Branin 2004

Recorded between 1983-1984, this album collects the entire recorded output of Chicago punk legends SAVAGE BELIEFS, including their long OOP 7" EP from 1983, The Moral Efficiency Of Savage Beliefs, and the group's two 1984 sessions, both of which were recorded by IAIN BURGESS. The story I remember hearing on the Lowest Form way back when was that (with the obvious exception of Paco) most of the members aren't really "of" the hardcore scene per se, but were rather people who might identify socially and subculturally with a scene other than hardcore punk even if they had an interest in the genre. I may have messed up some details or invented that story out of thin air, but listening to Personal Space it sounds like it could be true. This is a record that has all of the abstract qualities of hardcore--it's heavy, loud, noisy, fast, angry, etc.--but it arrives at those adjectives via a completely different route than what bands raised and bred on little other than hardcore tend to do. There are no breakdowns, no obvious nods to other bands' riffs or songs... just a concerted and earnest attempt to embody the adjectives listed above. At times the Lowest Form--despite the fact that they sound like they rely primarily on the standard hardcore band setup of guitar, drums, bass and vocals--sound more like industrial music than hardcore... as with industrial, there's an emphasis on the texture of particular sounds and how they layer on one another, sit together, and comprise a composition. In a word, it feels like art, and while that may turn some people off it gets me really excited. On their previous records, SJN wore their Cleveland influences proudly on their collective sleeve, with a sound clearly grounded in the nihilistic thrash of bands like 9 Shocks Terror and H100s. This time around, though, it sounds to me like they’ve transcended those influences. On the one hand there’s a distinct Gauze vibe running through this record… no one out there really sounds like Gauze, and bands who try to imitate their whiplash tempo changes usually end up sounding mathy. However, there’s something of that vibe here, even if it’s hard to put my finger on what precisely it is. It’s hardly straight Gauze worship, though, as there’s also a strong thread of more modern hardcore running through the record. The combination of the Gauze-esque changes and more modern-sounding breakdown parts means that this ends up sounding like a noisier, more chaotic of that Omegas LP that came out on Beach Impediment a few months ago. This is probably a little more punk and a little less hardcore, but it definitely appeals to a similar sensibility, and is just as killer as you would expect any release on LVEUM to be.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0255/7539/products/IMG_0867_d681e9a1-09ec-46ba-a3f8-d9ac05d42c26.jpg?v=1489526166
diablesse-grupp-6-s-t-7
Diablesse Grupp 6: S/T 7"

cult 80's Swedish punk/hardcore ...

tracklist:

Den Vita Löparen
Våldtakt
Född I Farstun

3 of the bands compilation tracks finally released on vinyl.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0255/7539/products/IMG_0702_75d0ec6f-deb0-4f9f-a26b-08ef62aff543.jpg?v=1491347341
joint-d-intelligence-12
Joint D≠: مخابرات / Intelligence 12"

A highly significant leaked dossier of ripping hardcore, ‘Intelligence’ is dripping with arch rage and lateral hatred. It’s not so much that the music is any less complex, but the intricate riffs and rhythms are packed into a smaller space, delivered with a dizzying degree of speed, precision, and power. While the label’s first two releases were by Japanese bands, for their third release they mine the cassette discography of Finland’s Vastusta. I have no doubt that the Finnish classics have influenced the band as well, and this is by no means a million miles away from the breakneck hardcore of bands like Terveet Kadet and Bastards, but particularly in the vocal department Vastusta remind me so much of Warhead it’s uncanny. The music, production, and songwriting are all perfectly executed and deliver maximum intensity at all times. In other words, if angular riffs, densely layered sounds, surprising rhythms, and thought-provoking lyrics are the things you want from a hardcore record you are really going to like this one. If you’re looking for some straightforward band comparisons, fans of Bad Breeding, No, Una Bestia Incontrolable, labels like Iron Lung and La Vida Es Un Mus, and bands who live in that fuzzy space between DIY hardcore and AmRep-style noise rock should be sure to check this out. I’m reluctant to describe this any further because it’s just something you have to listen to and appreciate for what it is.
