I remember hearing this for the first time and being blown away by the fact that all of those words that Dave Smalley barked out with such earnest passion on the first Dag Nasty LP weren't, at least for the most part, written by him at all! Admittedly it's a little jarring hearing these versions after being familiar with the Smalley versions for so long... the music is basically exactly the same, but Shawn Brown has more of a harDCore-style bark than the melodic roar that Smalley would lay down on these tracks. As I noted in my description of the recent Gray Matter reissue, DC's Revolution Summer bands basically took the energy and aggression of early harDCore, took out the kind of bonehead elements, and grafted that onto the more song-oriented approach of '77-era British punk. On Subject to Change,, the Faith were the first band to make this leap and, in my opinion, by far the best. As someone who loved the energy of early hardcore but wanted actual songs, and who loved the dynamic, song-based approach of '77-era British punk but wished it was just a little more intense, Subject to Change is pretty much the perfect punk record. Expanding their sound from their early raw hardcore approach, by this time the Faith had added a second guitar player and the dynamic interplay between them is just mind-bending. However, because for years these tracks were only available tacked onto the end of the Faith / Void split CD, they not only got relegated to the status of "bonus material," but also just sounded a little dry and wimpy next to the singular onslaught of Void. Taken on its own, however, this is a seminal document, and Dischord's tasteful remastering makes it sound slightly louder and crisper than the original without sounding "modern" at all.

However, that's just the A-side! The b-side contains a remastered version of the Faith's demo tape, which has circulated for years in the tape trading circles and once on a bootleg split double 7" with Kansan Uutiset(!!!). As with the reissue of Void's demo tape, this is like hearing this stuff for the first time... everything is clear, bright, and f***ing powerful as s***... it sounds like a recording just as powerful as any of the other early Dischord releases. Basically, this era of the Faith was picking up where SOA left off, and that connection is even more apparent on the demo material than on the split LP with Void. This is absolutely seminal hardcore, and hopefully having it on its own slab of wax will make people appreciate it more this time around. The band continues further down the proto-prog metal road of Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, and this time around, the synthesizers feel more organically integrated into the arrangements. What's more, the song structures generally feel less conventional and more challenging. There's one significant exception in the blatant pop tune "Am I Going Insane (Radio)," which rivals "Changes" as the most fan-loathed song of the glory years, thanks to its synth-driven arrangement (there isn't even a guitar riff!) and oft-repeated one-line chorus. But other than that song and the terrific album opener, "Hole in the Sky," the band largely eschews the standard verse-chorus format, sticking to one or two melody lines per riffed section and changing up the feel before things get too repetitive. The prevalence of this writing approach means that Sabotage rivals Vol. 4 as the least accessible record of Sabbath's glory years. However, given time, the compositional logic reveals itself, and most of the record will burn itself into the listener's brain just fine. The faster than usual "Symptom of the Universe" is a stone-cold classic, its sinister main riff sounding like the first seed from which the New Wave of British Heavy Metal would sprout (not to mention an obvious blueprint for Diamond Head's "Am I Evil?"). Like several songs on the record, "Symptom" features unexpected acoustic breaks and softer dynamics, yet never loses its drive or focus, and always feels like Sabbath. Less immediate but still rewarding are "Thrill of It All," with its triumphant final section, and the murky, sullen "Megalomania," which never feels as long as its nearly nine and a half minutes. But more than the compositions, the real revelation on Sabotage is Ozzy Osbourne, who turns in his finest vocal performance as a member of Black Sabbath. Really for the first time, this is the Ozzy we all know, displaying enough range, power, and confidence to foreshadow his hugely successful solo career. He saves the best for last with album closer "The Writ," one of the few Sabbath songs where his vocal lines are more memorable than Tony Iommi's guitar parts; running through several moods over the course of the song's eight minutes, it's one of the best performances of his career, bar none. Unfortunately, after Sabotage, the wheels of confusion came off entirely. Yes, there were technically two more albums, but for the non-obsessive, the story of Osbourne-era Sabbath effectively ends here.

Repressed by American Recordings. Like a lot of you, I've been jamming mp3s of this for the past few weeks, and after finally hearing the vinyl I have to say it sounds a lot better... the mastering job here sounds a little denser and more straightforward than the digital version, which when combined with the always-spot-on Toxic State packaging makes this absolutely essential to own on wax. If you haven't heard Hank Wood yet, they're one of the most unique and exciting bands in punk today... kinda surf-y, kinda garage-y riffs augmented with Sonics-style farfisa organ, a supplementary percussionist that makes some totally wild rhythms, and vocals that are more like really simple rapping than any punk vocalist you've heard before. It's a wild combination, but it's completely infectious, as anyone who has heard the band will tell you. Fugazi is a band that I followed really closely in my youth (and a show on the Red Medicine tour was my second-ever punk show), but I was mostly into Repeater and after, never even really spending much time with their first EP, much less this demo material. As a lot of people have commented, this captures a very different version of the band than what they would evolve into. I've always found there to be a kind of virtuosic, almost Guitar Center-y quality to the later Fugazi stuff that keeps me from fully appreciating it in the context of most of the rawer music that I listen to nowadays, and that's really not present on this material at all. It's not as if the band isn't good already, it's just that on this material (and this recording in particular) they seem much more of their time, and you can certainly hear the connection to earlier bands like Embrace, Rites of Spring, and the like. It's really almost like a different band, and if for that reason only this is certainly worth hearing.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0255/7539/products/IMG_1784_5af07c89-e7b4-4c20-b970-565a5b2e3436.jpg?v=1420245341
death-spiritual-healing-12
Death: Spiritual Healing 12"

No extreme metal artist has come close to touching Death in scope, influence, or simply quality. Death's landmark record, Spiritual Healing is nothing short of genre-defining.
