Our take: Man, this record has really sunk its teeth into me over the past couple of weeks. I guess that's usually the way things are... it's the ones that creep up on you slowly that really go the deepest and stay with you the longest. It's not as if I didn't like Walk Into the Fire when I first put it on, it's just that every time I listen to it I like it way more. What it took me so long to appreciate is how pop this record is. That's easy to miss because there are so many surface-level things to get distracted by: the aggressive synth textures, the powerful vocals, and the all-encompassing nature of the overall vibe. However, once I was able to push past that stuff (which is admittedly cool) I realized how finely-crafted these songs are, particularly the vocal melodies and performances. Further, while it has obvious precedents in the minimal synth, post-pun, and goth-rock genres, I don't think that this sounds like much else that's out there. I'm really not sure how to describe this record accurately because I feel like, even after quite a few listens, it's still revealing itself to me. So, while I seem to be unable to tell you precisely why, I can tell you that this is highly recommended and it's going to take something very special to bump this off my turntable and keep it from being my most-listened-to record of the month.
