Public Acid is a band of nasty motherfuckers who know exactly what they are doing. On the 10th volume of Shout Recordings’ Beat Sessions, the group pushes every element of their music to the absolute limit. The set, captured masterfully live in studio by Shout’s own reclusive production savant, Mike Kriebel, encompasses material mostly from their near flawless 2020 Condemnation EP and 2018’s Easy Weapons LP. The music here evokes the kind of fear, chaos, anguish, and confusion of actually doing acid publicly. Set and setting are out the fucking window as the listener is dragged by the back of the neck though 8 tracks of hardcore punk, masterfully constructed and completely unhinged at the same time. An experience beyond limits. Pain and pleasure, indivisible. Guitars here are absurdly distorted. Their violent timbre is the perfect vessel for precision riffs that hit the listener in the sweet spot like some kind of brutalizing ASMR. Drums hit hard as fuck and still retain a nimble finesse that damn near swing. A completely unpredictable and maniacal vocal floats, grimaces, and exalts over the music completely free of the constraints of meter, melody, rhythm, or time. An essential freeness also found in the Ascension era output John Coltrane, another native son of North Carolina. Find your liberation in Public Acid.
