REPLICANTES is probably the most famous punk rock (not hardcore) band from Brazil, their three first LPs were release by major labels, but before that in 1984 they recorded a, very rare, self-released 7" on their label, Vortex. On the 7" you can hear much rawer versions of songs that became classics on their first LPs, "Surfista Calhorda" and "O Futuro é Vortex," and two other songs that were never rerecorded. This reissue was remastered from the original tapes and comes with an extra 16-page booklet full of info, flyers, text and photos by Rochelle Costi, a great brazilian artist that made the artwork for the 7".

Our take: While I wasn't familiar with them before getting this reissue in stock, apparently Os Replicantes were one of the biggest punk bands in Brazil in the 80s, with three LPs released on a major label there. However, this release is a reproduction of their first EP, which was a DIY-produced 4-songer that stands up with just about any second-wave UK or Euro punk that you could put it up against. This is definitely a pre-hardcore iteration of punk rock... you won't find any hints of the wild, raw direction that Brazilian hardcore would take, but you will get six catchy punk blasts that take obvious influence from the Pistols and the Clash, much like the European bands of the late 70s that those groups influenced. The songs are big, hooky, and memorable, and the production is very raw yet powerful. Great packaging on this one too, with two excellent additional studio outtakes added to the track listing, a repro of the (very cool) original sleeve and extra inserts containing additional lyrics, photographs, and liner notes (both in English and Portuguese). While this may not be wild enough to qualify as KBD per se, those with an interest in worldwide punk, and second-wave, Pistols-inspired punk in particular will love this.
