Devo really needs no introduction. They are one of the most iconic bands in rock history and have been releasing recordings for over 40 years. The moniker comes from the concept of de-evolution: the idea that instead of continuing to evolve, mankind has actually begun to regress as evidenced by the dysfunction and herd mentality in American society. Originally from Akron, OH and formed in 1973, the classic line-up consisted of two sets of brothers – the Mothersbaughs (Mark on vocals, keyboards and guitar and Bob on guitar and vocals) and the Casales (Gerald on bass, vocals and bass synth and Bob on guitar, keyboards and backing vocals) along with drummer Alan Myers.

The band achieved a Billboard charting hit in 1980 with the memorable and catchy, "Whip It," which was featured heavily in the early days of MTV and pushed the band into mainstream popularity. Devo became known for their music and elaborate stage performances combining kitsch science fiction themes, surrealist humor and satirical social commentary. Their off kilter pop songs include unusual time signatures and synths that have proven very influential on subsequent new wave, industrial and alternative rock acts. Recommendations from David Bowie and Iggy Pop helped Devo land a recording contract with Warner Bros. in 1978.

This brand new Run Out Groove title pulls together some of the band's hard-to-find and unique B-Sides and remixes from various 7" and 12" records in one 15-track collection for the first time. Pressed on colored 180g vinyl at Record Industry in the Netherlands, Turn Around: B-Sides and More 1978-1984 comes housed in a beautiful single pocket tip-on Stoughton jacket with a few additional goodies inside!

Our take: Limited-edition vinyl compilation bringing together a bunch of rare Devo tracks with luxurious packaging, including a heavy tip-on jacket, a cool embroidered patch, and a sheet of stickers. Devo is one of the greatest bands of all time, and tracks like “Social Fools,” “Turn Around” (famously covered by Nirvana on Incesticide), and “Penetration in the Centrefold” are killer. I have these songs on other releases, but I don’t revisit them often enough and it’s great to hear vintage Devo that I haven’t played to death. I’m sure everyone has their own feelings about the Devo discography, but I’m of the opinion that after the peak of Freedom of Choice the quality drops off for New Traditionalists and Oh No! It’s Devo. To me, those are good-but-not-great albums, and one might say the same thing about the b-sides from those records collected here. So, while this is cool, don’t expect it to knock your socks off like those Hardcore Devo collections. That is a badass patch though…
