I hadn't spun Tragedy in ages and I've been pretty much obsessed with it since this came in to the shop. I'm not sure if it's because I had the Swedish version of this LP (which apparently suffers from an inferior mix) or what, but really I've never been grabbed by this record like I am now. I think that what really sticks out, weirdly enough, is how un-Discharge-like it is in many ways. While obviously you could point toward any number of blatant Discharge nods on this (or any other Disclose) record, so many aspects of the songwriting are things that Discharge never did, or things that Discharge did but they're tweaked slightly in a way that makes them stand out against the background of total d-beat worship. It's an incredibly subtle thing that's difficult to pinpoint and articulate, but at the end of the day it's these subtleties that are the x-factor that separates a band like Disclose--who were as exciting and as vital as punk music gets--from bands who imitate other bands' sounds or styles in ways that are obvious, boring, and/or goofy. Stuart Schrader touches upon this point in his excellent liner notes to Yesterday's Fairytale, Tomorrow's Nightmare, so if you're interested in the philosophical underpinnings of d-beat you'll definitely want to read that. Otherwise, if you want to "get" Disclose, this particular reissue is probably the best place to start, because if you can't rage out to this record then Disclose probably aren't the band for you.

It’s only fitting that Whatever Brains contribute a record to Sorry State’s NC Single Series because, since the dissolution of Double Negative, Whatever Brains have become the veteran band on the circuit and de facto leaders of the scene (at least as far as many are concerned). The a-side track, “An Object,” is ostensibly about the phenomenon of “independent” “punk” bands hiring publicists, though I probably never would have known that if Rich hadn’t told me. What I’m more interested in is the song’s sweeping, almost triumphant synth melody, which shows just how much the Brains have grown as songwriters since their cacophonous early releases. (By the way, when I remarked that said synth melody sounded to me like the theme from The Love Boat, Rich replied that it was actually inspired by Gizmo’s song from Gremlins.) When I first heard the full session I remember being really bummed that the a-side, "Sanctioned Genocide," wasn't going to be on the LP. At the time it was (and it still might be) the best Skemäta song, perfectly showcasing what is totally unique about the band. Unafraid to incorporate blatantly melodic elements into their foundation of crushing d-beat, Skemäta's consistent genre-busting make them a band for the cognoscenti of the d-beat scene. You can't just listen to them and immediately recognize what they're doing... the music has depth, and requires more of you as a listener than just passive recognition. While it may take a little while to adjust your ears to those melodic elements and all of the complex, almost prog-changes, the rewards for doing so are immeasurably high. This is most definitely hardcore, but nearly every aspect of it is substantially quirky if you pay attention. The rhythms in particular are really counter-intuitive and really quite inventive. John Evicci's drumming has always been a model of precision, and he's definitely perfect for all of the bizarre little twists and turns that these songs take. That sense of quirkiness also extends into the lyrics and (particularly) the lead guitar playing as well, which has a quirky sensibility that definitely doesn't rely on the harmonies you might expect. Of course all of this quirkiness means that Stun Event don't have the fist-pumping directness that Out Cold has, but particularly if you appreciate precise, inventive playing I think that the rewards of this 7" can be just as great as much of Out Cold's material. This is part of Earache's "Full Dynamic Range Vinyl" series and while that might imply that it skimps on volume, that couldn't be further from the case... this is extreme music (maybe even the beginning of extreme music as we know it?), and this pressing is still appropriately, ear-splittingly loud. However, it also has depth and warmth that you don't hear nearly as much nowadays... it honestly sounds like a pressing from the 80s in the best way possible (it was mastered directly from the original tapes), and the artwork is reproduced much more faithfully than many recent metal reissues (I'm looking at you, Death and Sodom reissue campaigns!). Now that that's out of the way, I can get to my little mini-essay on "what Napalm Death means to me." I can still remember the first time I heard this band sometime in the early to mid 90s when I was still a teenager and my ears really weren't prepared for it. At the time it sounded hilariously awful, and it would take me many, many years to want to revisit Napalm Death, a process lengthened by having to sit through live sets by innumerable terrible, unimaginative grindcore and power violence bands in my life. However, a handful of years ago something clicked and I realized that I love Napalm Death. What once sounded more like a comedy routine than "serious music" suddenly sounded organic, uncontrived, and--even though it was by then far removed from its original context--revolutionary. Scum in particular is a fascinating listen because the two sides of the record--recorded nine months apart in 1986 and 1987--capture very different eras of the band. The a-side sounds so punk to me now... it sounds like the strand of punk that runs through Discharge, Conflict, Rudimentary Peni, and numerous other anarcho and d-beat bands taken to its logical extreme. The recording is also thick and clear (especially compared to the manufactured, computerized rawness so many modern extreme bands go for), and sounds surprisingly un-metal to my 2016 ears. As for the b-side, this is where the revolutionary and fully realized Napalm Death sound begins to take shape. The lineup has largely solidified and what, just a few months earlier, sounded like hardcore punk stretched to its furthest extremes, now sounds undeniably like something else, and while the sound would arguably be perfected over the band's next handful of releases (the Mentally Murdered EP being a personal favorite), greatness has already been achieved here. An undeniably classic album, and it's particularly great to see it back in print as such a carefully executed reissue.

<span data-sheets-value="{"1":2,"2":"“Bleeding Gums are insane, there's no better way to describe these guys. On their previous records, SJN wore their Cleveland influences proudly on their collective sleeve, with a sound clearly grounded in the nihilistic thrash of bands like 9 Shocks Terror and H100s. This time around, though, it sounds to me like they‚Äôve transcended those influences. On the one hand there‚Äôs a distinct Gauze vibe running through this record‚Ķ no one out there really sounds like Gauze, and bands who try to imitate their whiplash tempo changes usually end up sounding mathy. However, there‚Äôs something of that vibe here, even if it‚Äôs hard to put my finger on what precisely it is. It‚Äôs hardly straight Gauze worship, though, as there‚Äôs also a strong thread of more modern hardcore running through the record. The combination of the Gauze-esque changes and more modern-sounding breakdown parts means that this ends up sounding like a noisier, more chaotic of that Omegas LP that came out on Beach Impediment a few months ago. This is probably a little more punk and a little less hardcore, but it definitely appeals to a similar sensibility, and is just as killer as you would expect any release on LVEUM to be.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0255/7539/products/IMG_0867_d681e9a1-09ec-46ba-a3f8-d9ac05d42c26.jpg?v=1489526166
diablesse-grupp-6-s-t-7
Diablesse Grupp 6: S/T 7"

cult 80's Swedish punk/hardcore ...

tracklist:

Den Vita Löparen
Våldtakt
Född I Farstun

3 of the bands compilation tracks finally released on vinyl.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0255/7539/products/IMG_0702_75d0ec6f-deb0-4f9f-a26b-08ef62aff543.jpg?v=1491347341
natural-causes-sponge-bath-split-7
Natural Causes / Sponge Bath: Split 7"
Our take: There’s this pattern I’ve noticed where a lot of times my favorite song by a particular Sorry State band won’t actually appear on a Sorry State release. I remember Rough Kids had this song called “Into the 00s” that I really loved—that song is one of the main reasons I wanted to work with them—and despite the fact that they re-recorded a couple of older tunes for their debut LP that wasn’t one of them. My favorite track from the sessions for Skemäta’s first album ended up on the Sanctioned Genocide 7” on Solar Funeral. And now you can add Natural Causes to the list of bands who have dangled their very best track in front of me like a carrot, only to snatch it away at the last second. “Deidre” comes from the same sessions as Natural Causes’ great new LP on Sorry State, but it’s better than any of the songs on that record. It’s just one of those perfect songs… the triumphant main riff reminds me of a bigger-than-life punk song like “Autonomy” by the Buzzcocks or “Soldier’s Requiem” by Naked Raygun even if it doesn’t sound like either of those at all. And then there’s the little middle Eastern-sounding guitar part that I tease the band members by calling “the Offspring part,” and while it has evoked some gentle teasing it’s one of the most memorable riffs the band has come up with. Man, what a track! On the flip side you get a remix of “Fashion Device” from the Sorry State album done by North Carolina noise / dance freaks Spongebath, and it certainly takes that track to a very different place than Natural Causes’ version.
