This stuff has been out there before, long making the rounds in tape trading circles and even getting a vinyl releases on the now-defunct Selfless Records. I remember hearing this for the first time and being blown away by the fact that all of those words that Dave Smalley barked out with such earnest passion on the first Dag Nasty LP weren't, at least for the most part, written by him at all! Admittedly it's a little jarring hearing these versions after being familiar with the Smalley versions for so long... the music is basically exactly the same, but Shawn Brown has more of a harDCore-style bark than the melodic roar that Smalley would lay down on these tracks. This is part of Earache's "Full Dynamic Range Vinyl" series and while that might imply that it skimps on volume, that couldn't be further from the case... this is extreme music (maybe even the beginning of extreme music as we know it?), and this pressing is still appropriately, ear-splittingly loud. However, it also has depth and warmth that you don't hear nearly as much nowadays... it honestly sounds like a pressing from the 80s in the best way possible (it was mastered directly from the original tapes), and the artwork is reproduced much more faithfully than many recent metal reissues (I'm looking at you, Death and Sodom reissue campaigns!). Now that that's out of the way, I can get to my little mini-essay on "what Napalm Death means to me." I can still remember the first time I heard this band sometime in the early to mid 90s when I was still a teenager and my ears really weren't prepared for it. At the time it sounded hilariously awful, and it would take me many, many years to want to revisit Napalm Death, a process lengthened by having to sit through live sets by innumerable terrible, unimaginative grindcore and power violence bands in my life. However, a handful of years ago something clicked and I realized that I love Napalm Death. What once sounded more like a comedy routine than "serious music" suddenly sounded organic, uncontrived, and--even though it was by then far removed from its original context--revolutionary. Scum in particular is a fascinating listen because the two sides of the record--recorded nine months apart in 1986 and 1987--capture very different eras of the band. The a-side sounds so punk to me now... it sounds like the strand of punk that runs through Discharge, Conflict, Rudimentary Peni, and numerous other anarcho and d-beat bands taken to its logical extreme. The recording is also thick and clear (especially compared to the manufactured, computerized rawness so many modern extreme bands go for), and sounds surprisingly un-metal to my 2016 ears. As for the b-side, this is where the revolutionary and fully realized Napalm Death sound begins to take shape. The lineup has largely solidified and what, just a few months earlier, sounded like hardcore punk stretched to its furthest extremes, now sounds undeniably like something else, and while the sound would arguably be perfected over the band's next handful of releases (the Mentally Murdered EP being a personal favorite), greatness has already been achieved here. From Morbid Tales (1984), through To Mega Therion (1985), onwards to Into The Pandemonium (1987) and finally Vanity/Nemesis (1990), this is a band who refused to conform or follow any specific musical direction. They experimented, took risks and in the process have left behind a remarkable catalogue which is timeless and extraordinary. When you hear these albums, you'll appreciate why succeeding generations of diehard fans and cutting edge bands are so heavily inspired and influenced by Celtic Frost.

It almost seems churlish to regard Celtic Frost as one of the great extreme metal bands, because they were so much more than that. It's better to hail them as among the finest extreme and experimental bands of the 1980s. Refusing ever to do what was expected or demanded, the band constantly changed musical direction, always brought in surprising influences, and kept people guessing as to where they might venture next. Their catalog of albums is formidable and unmatched. Each is not only unique, but part of an entire tapestry that only now can be appreciated for being a remarkable part of music history. Despite, or maybe because of, constant turmoil on so many fronts, Celtic Frost achieved an artistic level few others would even have dared to dream of aspiring towards. They climbed high because they were never afraid to fall. Which is why the band are now rightly regarded as icons, and iconoclasts.

The band's cornerstone third album Into Pandemonium was originally released in 1987 and represented a turning point for a whole genre, being extremely ahead of its time. This collection on Sealed Records doesn’t add much aside from super cool new artwork and a rad poster insert, but you won’t find me complaining that some of the best anarcho punk ever is back in print. Zounds’ first single, Can’t Cheat Karma, is a top 5 Crass Records release for me. One of the most musically sophisticated and capable anarcho bands, Zounds made chart-worthy music for the punks, and the three tracks from Can’t Cheat Karma are all hits that will inspire a singalong at any gathering of spiky punks. If you haven’t heard them before the choruses will hit you immediately, but as the tracks sink in you’ll notice all kinds of subtleties, particularly in the guitars, which dance across the beat with the grace of a seasoned ska or funk player. Amazingly, Zounds got even better on their second single, Demystification. The title track is the band’s best song, brooding pop that brings in subtle organ sounds to make the track both fuller and more delicate. The b-side, “Great White Hunter,” is probably Zounds’ best song other than “Demystification,” with a big classic rock riff anchoring the track. Their final three singles don’t get as much attention from punks, but they’re full of moments of equal brilliance. The a-sides to their final two singles both had a Smiths-esque rockabilly jangle different from anything the band had done before, but equally brilliant. As you can tell, Zounds are one of my favorite anarcho bands and the thirteen tracks here are long since burned into my memory banks from repeated play. If you don’t already have these songs on a physical format, this beautiful looking and great-sounding reissue will do the trick just fine.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0255/7539/products/1b149c33054f816ba2a21ee2b67e50d84fbc161c.jpg?v=1549582696
190322879
Attak: Zombies 12"

Probably the first experiment in mixing hardcore attitude with OI! songwriting ever made within the UK punk movement, ATTAK were born as a four piece in New Mills in 1981, but immediately reversed to a trio when their singer left for school commitments and released two incredible singles on the No Future label in this form, right before recruiting a new guitarist and record ‘Zombies’, who came out in 1983 on the same label. Their style was much different than their “hardcore” peers and featured a style that couldn’t really be categorized by normal punk conventions.

The best preserved copy of End Result's hand-dubbed The Seven Year Locust Returns cassette was located in the archive of Chicago experimental institution ONO. It was subsequently and expertly transferred and mastered by Carl Saff. Pressed into vinyl and placed inside a cardboard sleeve for you to buy, rip open and enjoy.

Our take: Vinyl reissue of this 1982 cassette, which the band only circulated among their friends in the Chicago area. While I’ve seen End Result’s name crop up in discussions of early Chicago punk, they sound nothing like the big names I associate with that scene: Naked Raygun, Effigies, Article of Faith, Big Black, etc. The label’s description pegs End Result as a no wave style band, but they don’t sound like the Contortions or DNA. Instead The Seven Year Locust Returns sounds like a total deconstruction of music. The tracks appear chronologically, the first from September 1980, and the last track coming from July 1982. This running order emphasizes their process of deconstruction; while the first track, “Children Die in Pain,” reminds me of the bleakest moments of early Joy Division, it’s by far the most conventional track on the record. While you’ll hear guitar, bass, and drums (as well as some trumpet and more ambiguous noises), there’s nothing here that sounds like a conventional rock band. Sometimes it’s formless, like the Velvets-esque jam “Let Them Eat Cake,” while other tracks hang around a minimal structure reminding me of minimal synth music. It’s clear End Result were trying to go as far out as they could, and each successive journey took them further and further away from whatever rock-isms they may have began with. The one constant is the menacing, often frightening, vocals, which remind me of Tomata Du Plenty from the Screamers or Bruce Loose from Flipper. The only catch is the recording is very primitive. While I’m not positive, these sound like primitive rehearsal room recordings, which blunts the impact somewhat. Still, historians of Chicago punk and/or the wider no wave / outsider punk scene will find value here.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0255/7539/products/2a31e4c3d04cd35264262495e06d3e10fd6a6b55.jpg?v=1563471773
190801922
D.R.I.: Dirty Rotten 12"

This is the long out of print (on vinyl ) LP that was made from the Dirty Rotten EP.

The band realized once they saw the prices on things that to do their 22 song 7" as a 12" would only cost a little more.
