It's a wild combination, but it's completely infectious, as anyone who has heard the band will tell you. But then the single on Sub Pop was good, but not really explosive, and in my opinion the songs on the split 12\" with the Oh Sees didn't really stick out that much either. However, it's clear now that Total Control were saving themselves for this record, because it's really incredible. The environment in 2014 is very different... everyone and their brother seems to have a post-punk band, yet Total Control still feel miles ahead. The intro track is a total scorcher, a blistering blast of Depeche Mode-influenced electro pop that I think is easily the best track they've done (particularly in this style) since \"Paranoid Video.\" Over the course of the LP the band moves so fluidly between so many styles... krautrock, new wave, garage-punk, and the big closer \"Safety Net,\" which could almost be like U2 or something with its big, triumphant melody. I've probably listened to this 30+ times since it came out, and I don't see it getting old any time soon. Two years later and they’ve delivered a follow-up record that proves they’re still one of the most exciting bands around, embracing originality, modernity, and earnestness where so many bands are content with a detached and ironic retro sensibility. Stylistically, \u003ci\u003eMisanthropocentric\u003c\/i\u003e continues along the lines of the first LP but pushes at the boundaries of the band’s sound, making the hard parts harder, the noisy parts noisier, and the catchy parts even catchier. Through the din Scott Plant’s brilliant lyrics remain the centerpiece; I can’t think of a single other current punk lyricist who can be so direct and blunt without ever descending into cliche. The a-side track, “An Object,” is ostensibly about the phenomenon of “independent” “punk” bands hiring publicists, though I probably never would have known that if Rich hadn’t told me. What I’m more interested in is the song’s sweeping, almost triumphant synth melody, which shows just how much the Brains have grown as songwriters since their cacophonous early releases. I'm not familiar enough with this genre to throw a bunch of band comparisons at you, but the key word that comes to mind when I listen to Spokenest is \"scrappy.\" \"Scrappy\" in the same way that the Minutemen were scrappy. I guess by that I mean that the playing is a little loose and the song structures are kind of jagged, but the heart really shines through. If words like \"earnest\" and \"melodic\" are apt to scare you away you'll probably want to avoid this, but it's nice to see bands like Spokenest and Street Eaters take the basic formula of scrappy, poppy punk of the early Lookout! The story I remember hearing on the Lowest Form way back when was that (with the obvious exception of Paco) most of the members aren't really \"of\" the hardcore scene per se, but were rather people who might identify socially and subculturally with a scene other than hardcore punk even if they had an interest in the genre. I may have messed up some details or invented that story out of thin air, but listening to \u003ci\u003ePersonal Space\u003c\/i\u003e it sounds like it could be true. This is a record that has all of the abstract qualities of hardcore--it's heavy, loud, noisy, fast, angry, etc.--but it arrives at those adjectives via a completely different route than what bands raised and bred on little other than hardcore tend to do. There are no breakdowns, no obvious nods to other bands' riffs or songs... just a concerted and earnest attempt to embody the adjectives listed above. At times the Lowest Form--despite the fact that they sound like they rely primarily on the standard hardcore band setup of guitar, drums, bass and vocals--sound more like industrial music than hardcore... as with industrial, there's an emphasis on the texture of particular sounds and how they layer on one another, sit together, and comprise a composition. In a word, it feels like art, and while that may turn some people off it gets me really excited. On their previous records, SJN wore their Cleveland influences proudly on their collective sleeve, with a sound clearly grounded in the nihilistic thrash of bands like 9 Shocks Terror and H100s. This time around, though, it sounds to me like they‚Äôve transcended those influences. On the one hand there‚Äôs a distinct Gauze vibe running through this record‚Ķ no one out there really sounds like Gauze, and bands who try to imitate their whiplash tempo changes usually end up sounding mathy. However, there‚Äôs something of that vibe here, even if it‚Äôs hard to put my finger on what precisely it is. It‚Äôs hardly straight Gauze worship, though, as there‚Äôs also a strong thread of more modern hardcore running through the record. The combination of the Gauze-esque changes and more modern-sounding breakdown parts means that this ends up sounding like a noisier, more chaotic of that Omegas LP that came out on Beach Impediment a few months ago. I remember Rough Kids had this song called “Into the 00s” that I really loved—that song is one of the main reasons I wanted to work with them—and despite the fact that they re-recorded a couple of older tunes for their debut LP that wasn’t one of them. My favorite track from the sessions for Skemäta’s first album ended up on the Sanctioned Genocide 7” on Solar Funeral. And now you can add Natural Causes to the list of bands who have dangled their very best track in front of me like a carrot, only to snatch it away at the last second. “Deidre” comes from the same sessions as Natural Causes’ great new LP on Sorry State, but it’s better than any of the songs on that record. It’s just one of those perfect songs… the triumphant main riff reminds me of a bigger-than-life punk song like “Autonomy” by the Buzzcocks or “Soldier’s Requiem” by Naked Raygun even if it doesn’t sound like either of those at all. And then there’s the little middle Eastern-sounding guitar part that I tease the band members by calling “the Offspring part,” and while it has evoked some gentle teasing it’s one of the most memorable riffs the band has come up with. Man, what a track! On the flip side you get a remix of “Fashion Device” from the Sorry State album done by North Carolina noise \/ dance freaks Spongebath, and it certainly takes that track to a very different place than Natural Causes’ version.
