With 1996's double-album EXPLODED DRAWING, North Carolina's angular Polvo arrived at the culmination of all their experimentation up to that point. Travelers on the same twisted guitar hero journey as Television and Sonic Youth before them, Polvo refuse to settle for easy answers throughout the album. A pronounced Eastern influence comes to the fore in "Passive Attack" and "The Secret's Secret," but elsewhere the focus is on complex time signatures and off-kilter rhythms. And the joy of discovery in more straightforward rockers like "High-Wire Moves" and "Crumbling Down" rewards the listener's patience throughout.
